Thank you, yes. Not one single reason to sit for lies, gaslighting and abuse.

Jason's avatar

I wish the Dems would all go, then all stand up and leave at the same time in unison, when Trump takes the stage.

Nay's avatar

I love that idea!

donna woodward's avatar

They aren't courageous enough, not imaginative enough to execute a decent protest.

Jason's avatar

Of course this is true. I thought of editing my comment earlier to say just that, but I didn't bother ha..

Jeffries and Schumer are..not those leaders.

Nancy's avatar

I am going to adopt this sentence: "Democrats should snap out of it!" Thank you for that clear and unequivocal message. Respecting the office by someone who disrespects it is silliness, at best.

Terry Westby's avatar

I loved when Cher said that line in Moonstruck. Maybe we should slap them too.

Rob Ginsberg's avatar

Sorry to quibble, it was her mom, Olympia Dukakis, who uttered that classic line to Cher.

Terry Westby's avatar

The clips show Cher saying it to Nicholas Cage

“Your life is going down the toilet!”

"Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday on MS NOW that he would go because he 'respected the institution.'"

SERIOUSLY, Chuck??? How about demonstrating a little respect for YOURSELF?? For cripe's sake, STAY HOME. Sort your sock drawer. Watch a "Simpsons" episode. Stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself, "How the f*ck did I let it come to THIS?" You owe yourself, and the rest of us, an explanation.

Susan DuBois's avatar

How about Schumer demonstrating a little respect for the Constitution and the majority of the US public, by staying away from the SOTU speech? Democrats (including the leadership) could take a cue from the US women's Olympic hockey team and say, sorry, we have a scheduling conflict.

Jane's avatar

Yes, a shout out for the WOMEN’S Hockey Team for their refusal to kiss the ring!

You are admired by every strong, independent-minded, hockey fan!

Perhaps the good men within the hockey world will step forward to represent the non-ring kissers! Remember silence is consent!

We know a fraud when we meet him. DJT is a fraud.

Susan Still's avatar

Maybe he’ll follow Republican protocol and stand up to say, “You LIE!”

Roger Fradenburgh's avatar

I'd love to see him stand up, but he's not done much of that lately. Out of practice. At the very least, maybe he'll pull a Samuel Alito and mutter, "Not so" under his breath.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

If he did that, he'd never sit down.

Nay's avatar

I lost respect for the man years ago. He is as spineless as a jellyfish!! And he NEEDS TO GO! Come on New Yorkers!!!!

Queltiquegoddess's avatar

New Yorker here: Chuck Schumer is going to learn why we have PRIMARIES!! Many of here want him to "retire."

JP Connolly's avatar

I certainly agree with that: he's gotta just go. But I'm not seeing anybody appearing to primary him.

Queltiquegoddess's avatar

The sad truth is that he's not up for re-election until November 2028. But that provides us with plenty of time to find someone who can force Chuck into retirement. I'd like to see Tish James as a Senator. Not sure if upstate NY 🙄 will vote for a feisty, black woman - but we need to be optimistic.

dagmar karppi's avatar

I do agree that he is a spineless jellyfish. I think he has given over his brain to Miller and Russel Aught. He is just following their playbook and accomplished 51 percent of their plan. Are they really the "president" since DJT has proven to be a follower and not a thinker. We have to add into the constitution, an amendment that a president hopeful has to take an IQ test.

Nick's avatar

As a result of Schumer being Minority/Majority leader in the Senate there is the largest transfer of wealth from the Middle Class and the poor to the top 1% (there could have been a permanent tax bill when Schumer was Majority leader in 2021 and 2022), the John Lewis Voting Rights and Freedom to Vote Acts never passed.

Mike Burton's avatar

Respect the Institution? You mean just like Trump has respected the "institution." Institutionally, after John Adams in 1800, Presidents didn't deliver the SOTU verbally until Woodrow Wilson, and he was a college professor, besides being a racist. Roger is right, go home and sort out your sock drawer, or better, stuff one in your mouth.

The College Park Courier's avatar

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why every single patriot does not see it the way you have written it. Chuck Schumer looks like a bumbling idiot! But bravo to you Jen Rubin for your courage to speak truth to power. Well done!

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Well, and he makes us look stupid too, as a putative leader.

BosPhotoGuy's avatar

Ms. Rubin has written many great lines, but I think this one tops them all.

"Democrats should snap out of it. Until legal and political accountability can be imposed on Trump, the response to his shredding the Constitution and perpetuating a pedophile coverup must be consistent, unceasing moral opprobrium."

Kathleenmulcahy's avatar

I was moved to comment because of that sentence! Of course! No dignified person would submit themselves to one of his hideous harangues in person!

Laurie's avatar

I'll be streaming the People's State of the Union and won't even peek at the shitshow at the Capitol. But please let me know if he strokes out or otherwise falls apart. I do want to witness that.

It's Come To This's avatar

If that happens, it will be televised, videotaped, digitally marked for perpetuity, and re-run about a billion times all over the planet for the next 25 years....you'll get your chance.

Susan Fernbach's avatar

OTOH, we could end up with a “Weekend at Bernie’s” scenario…

donna woodward's avatar

I'm torn about watching it and will probably move between this and the other two people's SOTU. Why would I watch? Partly it's that part of a person drawn perversely to watch disasters like a building on fire or a live train wreck. It's also to be able to watch him squirm in real time as Dems hold up photos of the Epstein victims or maybe boo him during his most egregious lies. And I want to see the demeanor of the justices he maligned as they watch him further demean them tonight--as he most assuredly will do.

Justin Sayne's avatar

“Surely, we can do without Trump’s in-person SOTU.”

More precisely: “Surely, we can do without Trump…..”

Steve 218's avatar

Why limit yourself? We could do better without the current VP, Cabinet, and the complicit members of congress, not to mention the contingency on the supreme court (not capitalised intentionally).

Ivan Tufaart's avatar

One option would be for the Democrats to attend and sit in stony silence, backwards in their chairs, showing Don the Con only their backs. I gather that in the military, such a gesture (albeit standing and showing an officer one's back) is a way of saying "we respect your office but are expressing no confidence in the person holding the office"

That said, it's long past time for Schumer to grow a spine and a pair of gonads. If AOC doesn't take his seat away from him when he's up for re-election, at the very least he needs to step down or be thrown out as the Party's leader in the Senate, to be replaced with someone who is willing to fight. Too bad Harry Reid is dead.

It's Come To This's avatar

How about turning around and dropping trousers (and pantsuits) and bending over? Bet Donnie would lose his place on the teleprompter (not that we'd really be able to tell the difference).

Harvey Perry's avatar

I have said for years that if he ever passed by in my town, I would give him a full moon!

SueJ's avatar

Agree, and the only Democrats I can justify attending are the ones who have invited Epstein survivors, and the victims of ICE violence.

L B Rose's avatar

The Guardians of Pedophiles (GOP) deserve no respect.

Robot Bender's avatar

I wouldn't be surprised if the Epstein victims are denied entry. It would be in keeping with the regime.

patricia's avatar

So about 9:15P THE CAPITAL POLICE (BECAUSE THEY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE HONOR) march down the isle and arrest trumpscum for high crimes and misdemeanors against The United States of America and it's citizens...

patricia's avatar

it will be in the movie

patricia's avatar

The last scene in the movie will show all trump judges, cabinet members, congress r's who failed to act, family members, friends, "business" associates, etc. being arrested all over the country. Anyone who voted for trump will serve no jail time or pay a fine but will be prohibited from voting in ANY election for 20 years. THE END

patricia's avatar

that includes HOA president

Rich Stockton's avatar

As always, Jen nails it. in addition to everything stated above there is the fact that we already know what the state of the union currently is, NOT GOOD!

Lourdes Brown's avatar

Sage advice! Watch anything but… deny him the ratings. Watch Jimmy Kimmel.

Stewart Whisenant's avatar

The only attendees at the SOTU event tonight should be federal marshals with orders to arrest Trump after his speech and hold him for trial as Commander in Chief along with other members of the military establishment on charges of war crimes committed in Caribbean waters.

Claire Pettingale's avatar

Excellently said. Personally I think they should just refuse to let him enter the chamber until he has released the unredacted (except for victims) Epstein files.

Swbv's avatar

Exactly.

Musk, Thiel, Murdoch.

DJT: "Well, I think that foreign interests are represented by people that I believe have undue influence, they have a lot of influence over the Supreme Court. Whether it’s through fear or respect or friendships, I don’t know."

Robot Bender's avatar

That's rich coming from him of all people

It's Come To This's avatar

With Donnie, it won't be a SOTU talk, but a STFU screech.

And I've heard enough of those, delivered in that sing-songy, Baby Huey, whinybitchy, grotesquely self-pitying, gaslighting, lying, demented, nauseating voice to last me a lifetime.

I hope Democrats either boycott, or arrive -- then leave immediately when he opens his fat yawp. Just no more goddamn ping-pong paddles, please.

Steve 218's avatar

Hear, hear and well said.
