Well said!

And when you’re a star congress lets you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the purse strings. You can do anything.

Susie's avatar

Oh, my. Very well done. Bravo!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So glad Jennifer has introduced the topic of language. It's not a trivial issue.

Fascists and authoritarian regimes don't just seize power and try to erase the past, they change language to alter the very way we think. Closing down USAID and the FCPB aren't illegal usurpations of Congressional authority, but "going after waste fraud and abuse" (cue the Russian disinformation lies about USAID paying Taylor Swift $20 million to sing in Kyiv or underwrite drag operas in Vietnam).

"DEI" has been weaponized into idiocy. It did not take down a plane over the Potomac. No one is "eating cats and dogs in Springfield." Refugees walking across jungles and deserts are not "'vermin." There is no such thing as "wokeism." These are Orwellian group-think blurbs designed to help Donald Trump grab you by the you-know-whats. Do not let him do it. Demand that media stop cooperating with violations of the English language and common decency.

Yes, well said. And we need to address the PROPAGANDA that allows these lies to infect far too many Americans.

Also calling Trump "transactional" is actually about corruption, pay-to-play, bribery, extortion, etc.

Oh God. Im so scared. Personally of course me and mine will --probably!! ---be fine, protected by color, education, a passport , class and 💰💰💰. But precisely because of my position I should be obligated to go big to help. I wake up in the morning feeling OK. Then I remember what we have today. Who will stop President Musk and babbling idiot cruel man Rump? My father was in the Merchant Marine in World War 11. 400,OOO American men died fighting fascism. And now ....

We should also do away with GOP members of Congress who've abdicated... perhaps "abandoned" would be a better word... their duty to be in charge of deciding how much money gets spent and for what purposes. Think of the savings!

L B Rose's avatar

I applaud this suggestion. Right now, GOP congresspeople are used as very expensive (and not beautiful) decoration. They cannot think of anything other than obeying their master. They seem to be happy to forfeit the power they fought to gain. Are we better off with a neutered GOP? Tempting....

I would add that it's highly "inappropriate" for Congress to sit around on their patoots instead of zealously asserting their Constitutional powers.

Jeffrey Spencer's avatar

It isn't just "inappropriate", it is, in fact, "dereliction of duty." Members of this Congress are sworn to uphold, defend, and protect the constitution of the United States. What they are (not) doing is tantamount to willful abandonment of their collective responsibilities as our elected representatives. Voters can impeach the Congress by voting them out of office.

I was on a telephone town hall last night with my Virginia Democratic Senators Warner and Kaine. They gave me some hope that some actions are getting traction. They said the courts are the first line of defense but activism needed too. Call your Congressional representatives and tell them why you are mad and/or scared, especially as things start to impact you, your friends and family. With Republicans, emphasize the damages being done to our international security. They need proof the American people aren’t supporting this raid of our personal information and attack on our democracy.

PINO...love it. Along with acting "willy-nilly." Bravo!

Dr. Judith Schlesinger's avatar

PINO it shall be. Uniting around nomenclature, as you aptly point out, is a necessary part of resisting. PINO is perfect because it is a nickname for Pinocchio, which he is, of course, with his strings being pulled by others.

It also lends itself to spitting, which is helpful!

Jody Brink's avatar

Don't forget the growing nose when he lies. It should be making it hard for him to move around the White House.

Dr. Judith Schlesinger's avatar

LOL! That's OK. I don't think he moves much anyway.

You write and speak the truth. Many Americans have woken up....more must. Keep ringing the bell and shouting, "WAKE UP PEOPLE!" Now if only the dems would begin understanding the situation for what it is and acting on what they know. Forget legislative actions. That's just a sop. Stand up and give a coherent message...put Chris Murphy and other, younger fire in the belly speakers at the microphones. Schumer, stand in the back row. Time for real leadership.

Lucy Guerlac's avatar

Yes, forward younger, politically smarter and less cautious people!

I emailed my congressman yesterday and made it very clear to them that I wasn’t pleased with the Republicans just allowing Trump to walk all over and essentially shred the constitution. If he can’t play by the rules and obey court orders then every Republican in both House and Senate should vote to impeach. I hope impeachment still means something.

Catharine Farkas's avatar

If you are able to, please call their local state office everyday and complain about their latest dereliction of duty...

Calling works better than emails.

Diana Belsan's avatar

Thank you for telling it like it is.

Denise Murden's avatar

How’s it’s supposed to work and how blatantly the rules are being disregarded is so clearly explained here. I’m sending this to my clueless relative who thinks Musk’s forays are an “audit” by “the smartest guy in the world” that is necessary because “the government can’t audit itself.” I couldn’t begin to think how I would explain separation of powers, checks and balances, and the role of our congressional representatives before we can could even begin a discussion. You’ve done it or me, Jennifer.

Stu Zeiger's avatar

Suggest future words: replace "regulations" with "protections".

Lisa Jean Walker's avatar

The word “castrate” comes to mind, as in, Republican legislators are allowing themselves to be castrated. Most are men, certainly the leadership are, so I think it works pretty well.

Mark Epping-Jordan's avatar

So many other words and phrases to eliminate. “Co-equal branch,” “checks and balances,” “constitutional order,” “rule of law,” “democratic republic,” “representative democracy,” etc.

Liz Ayer, Nyc/MA's avatar

Yes we plainly do not have a democracy operating as it was meant to operate with the current group in charge. And we have the overbearing silence of republicans who allowed and abetted the current autocracy. And some people are questioning why there isn’t more of an uproar— when I hear my own mind talking to myself … it’s saying — the American people voted for this aberration and they gave control in their votes to the whole Congress. Wtf… writ large.
