Words of wisdom, without judgement. Thanks.

Many thanks for each question and comment and for pointing out Pope Leo's 'On Love for the Poor'. Have the 'adult' book. Will also get the teen and picture book. The child in me needs to be brave, too.

To the point of why the poor, often powerless people are the ones who rise up courageously, the Pueblo, Navajo and other Native peoples have stories (that are always more than stories in the conventional sense), in which it's generally the little animals, not the bear or the wolf or mountain lion, that save the day. For the Pueblo and Navajo, Spider Woman - a little spider - is the ultimate counselor and creator. When Monster Slayer is battling the giant, the little Horned Toad turns the tide. In the Iroquois myth, the Woman Who Fell from the Sky, the water birds caught her in mid air and gently put her on the back of a volunteer turtle. We still need Arrow Boy and Monster Slayer. But without the little ones, the ordinary ones, the battles aren't won. In the case of the Woman, as there became the need to expand the area of the turtle shell, it was the little muskrat who was able to dive down deep to bring up mud to create Turtle Island, or what we call North America. The bigger animals, the beaver and otter tried but were unsuccessful. So if the little muskrat could create a continent, I guess it's up to us little animals to defend it now. No kings, no monsters, no sorcerers. Maybe the Old Ones knew a few things that they passed down in stories. Everybody likes stories. We just need to listen to them more carefully.
