Trump only understands one kind of deal making negotiation -- distributive. That's when negotiators contend for a fixed resource, like a property. There are typically winners and losers.
This does not work in diplomacy and international relations. No nation will willingly come out of a negotiation as a loser. More typical are integrative negotiations, which seek win-win outcomes. Trump doesn't understand this. Plus, he is by nature a sadist, getting his sense of self-worth from causing pain to others.
Trump has no particular concern about American lives lost. Will we end up sacrificing American lives for a deal that’s not as good as the agreement Obama got? Given how clueless the Trump administration looks, the Law of Unintended Consequences will be operating in full force.
Please do not give the Dear Leader any credit for planning this war, having an objective or an exit strategy. Half his brain is damaged by a stroke and the other half, never very smart to begin with, is suffering from dementia. He had Hegseth whispering in one ear and Bibi in the other. The Dear Leader is an incurable malignant narcissist who is also a bully, easily flattered and with the attention span of a gnat. Hegseth is like a plastic GI Joe doll who you wind up and he acts tough, while Bibi has his own agenda: destroy Iran's regime.
If anything motivates the Dear Leader at all it is greed. If he thinks he can make a buck (or a few billion) he is gung ho, consequences be damned. And it is going to get worse.
No matter what Trump does and when, this war will grind on. Netanyahu clearly has an agenda of aggression, and Iran is the equivalent of a hornets' nest that has been kicked. The two war criminals have desabilized the whole region, and for at least as long as bombs are dropping and missiles flying, Iran is hardly likely to either negotiate or concede.
Moving into Iran on the ground is going to be too big a risk for the TACO. Dull as he is he can see increased casualties, POW's, bad press and stalemate. The only plus might be a national rally against a long established foe. No matter how much the public dislikes how we got to this the fact that we have will weigh heavily on what to do about it. That may keep him safe from the long coming reckoning.

Not a recipe for a successful foreign policy.
BLUFF is an accurate description of Trump’s war of choice.
And every bluff holds a cliff.
Very clear analysis, enabled by a very simple mind behind the (lack of) strategy and the equations of war; thank you.
"Once maximalist language enters the public frame, any outcome short of it risks being interpreted as retreat."
And this demonstrates a blowhard's approach to life. Hyperbole eventually makes a fool of the proclaimer. Infrastructure Week anybody?
TACO is akin to the Roman Catholic Church's only approved form of contraception. And just about as effective.

And Trump himself says he doesn't want a ceasefire. Because where's the "fun" in that?
Thank you.

Hence "forever war".
