Tech Titans have LOTS of money to hire all sorts of lawyers to fend off ANY RESPONSIBILITY for the harm they cause. Remember way before this AI chatbot nightmare we had (& still do have) the "Dark Web" and websites where mentally unstable young men can find support for their ultra-violent ideas (mass shootings)They lean heavily into this Section 230 rubbish - that was created when the internet was barely out of a DOS environment. The Tech Titans have LOTS of money to pay off elected officials who could make laws to regulate this industry. There is some hope here - individual, courageous judges, who are not impressed by the high-paid legal shill sent in by the Tech Titans, are starting to push back.
Congress is dysfunctional, and seems unable to pass legislation that might protect or benefit citizens, especially children. This current Congress removed funding for schools lunches, hardly the act of adults concerned about kids. We need to vote, and need Republicans to transform quickly into a viable party that believes in democracy. Otherwise, I am concerned that the two parties will be so busy fighting each other, the public and our needs, will become an inconvenient distraction.
But they're not fighting each other. There is one party which could and would do what's right (in most cases), but has no say in either house of congress. while the other party is interested only in supporting its strongman and enriching him and themselves. They are not interested in doing anything for their average constituents.
It's so easy to get sucked into the web. Think of all your friends who have been sucked into stories of Facebook which are out and out lies but because they saw it there they believe the weirdest crap..
Technology is always faster than the law. It’s time consumer protection advocates get to work and get this figured out. Child safety is priceless.
