I just loved this line: "His presence was not celebrated, maligned, or even acknowledged. " If only all media ignored him like this. Ahh. Such peace....

I actually thought there was a chance he would stand up and try to interrupt or interject. Would not have surprised me if he did, although I'm glad he didn't.

I wouldn't have been surprised either :)

You are so right, Irena. His appearance in Court today might be most important because it was not at all acknowledged.

Thank you all for standing up to represent democracy and the constitution

Bless you all

It was absolutely ridiculous that SCOTUS even entertained this constitutional question. It's right there, in the constitution for Pete's sake! He thinks a mere EO is going to override that? And now he's trying the same thing with voting. Lordy, that man needs to GO!

I like how he shows up to wield the power of his fabulous personality, as though in his presence the robes will lose their shit and say, You're right! Whatever you say, Mister Charisma! (I know, they usually do say that, but without him there. Hm. There's a lesson! Make him show up for every hearing.)

I suspect that the Supremes needed to hear this case to put the matter to rest once and for all. The orange menace and his cadre of thugs have tried to bypass the Constitution at every turn, and this needed to be heard by the highest court in the land.

It's just astonishing that the Supreme Court even agreed to hear the case. The Amendment means exactly what it says. Any child born in the US can grow up to be President.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

You said it better than me.

well, the Constitution (14th Amendment) applies to "all persons born in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof" (or words to that effect.)

SO Trumpies want to argue that undocumented foreigners are not subject to the jurisdiction of the US and thus not covered by that language. This is nonsense, though. An undocumented foreigner is subject to the laws of the US - they can't drive any speed they want on the highway, they can't steal or murder, they have to pay sales tax on what they buy ...

What the amendment had in mind was diplomatic personnel, representing foreign governments. They do have special status (and have been known to abuse it by ignoring parking tickets etc.). So if the French ambassador has a baby in the US, or his wife does if the ambassador is a man, then the baby is not a US citizen because of its birth.

Excellent news!! Thanks to Norm and his team in the courtroom, and ALL the Contrarians, who support our pro democracy movement!!!!!

Classic line regarding rump: “He simply sat there, then — perhaps realizing he would not be filmed or applauded — stood up and left.” 😂🤣

I managed to tune into snippets where Alito was trying to be cute and pretend the 1880 judgment by the Court somehow didn't really mean exactly what it did.

Highlight was maybe broadcast tonight on MS NOW -- where the Solicitor General tried to distract everyone by saying 'well it's a new world now, you can get on a plane and in 8 hours you're in America.' "A new world, but the same Constitution," came the immediate retort from the Chief Justice....

So much for "flexible" originalism.

Great experience to be there with signs support the 14th.

Much positive energy, wicked cool signs and very nice people (mostly).

And again I confirm a trend for larger crowd attendance and a younger average age.

There is hope.

So let's cheer for the only correct decision.

Got 3 smiles/nods and 1 fist bump from folks in uniform and carrying guns.

That is a good day from my protest experience in Maryland and D.C.

I was in my Thomas Paine costume.

If we considered genetic genealogy rather than birth or immigration to the U.S., I would be deported.

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Reason has been deported. Ooo, Michelle, as soon as I read what you said, I came across this New Republic article:

"The birthright citizenship clause enshrines the core idea that all people born in the United States are free and equal by virtue of their birth, as legal scholar Akhil Reed Amar explains in his brief in this case. Their status is not decided by bloodline or heritage; undoing the guarantee of equality as a birthright would make the constitutional order “hereditary” and “caste-like.”

That’s exactly the goal sought by Trump and Miller."

Even though we don't yet have a decision and I wouldn't be surprised by anything this court does, at least today's proceedings didn't go well for His Bloatness. He came to intimidate and left irrelevant, which is almost worse than rejection for his tender ego. He's fighting a something that is one of the good things about America.

How can this petulant child think he has any chance of "Making America Great Again" when he doesn't have the slightest inkling as to what America's good qualities are. To get there we also need to acknowledge what our problems have been some can learn from them not pretend they never happened because they hurt some fragile snowflake's feelings.

He seems to believe that we need to emulate characteristics of Russia and North Korea.

He also seems to not realize that, although several of the judges are cowards and seem eager to do his bidding most of the time, it's difficult to intimidate people with lifetime appointments.

He has a singular talent for self destruction. If he did some of the things the Dems advocate for that seem popular with the country or at least moderate his approach even a little, he might not be facing a potentially historic reversal in November.

I sense the fine hand of Stephen "Goebbels" Miller behind the executive order. He has long been the most odious, racist, anti-constitutionalist nazi in the Trump orbit and wields unbelievable power as Deputy Chief of Staff to the stupidest, most ignorant, senile, mentally incapacitated Oval Office resident in history.

Of course we can expect Clarence Thomas, whose great-grandparents benefited from the Amendment, and Samuel Alito, who should be deported back to Sicily for his lifetimeof sedition against the Constitution, laws, and polity of the United States, to support Rump's executive order. Let us hope the other seven will laugh him out of court.

tRump was the leader of the "Birthright Tourism" movement: he made a lot of money off of pregnant Russian women who paid to stay at Mar-a-Lago until their babies were born in a FL hospital.
