“In the House, Democrats are on track to…elect our first Black speaker.”
But if that Representative is an ineffectual, flaccid conciliator that has secret dealings with the POTUS SIL and is not willing to hold the criminals to account, to paraphrase Scott Colom's brilliant ad, “Sheee-it! We'll pick another speaker!”
The same goes for the Senate and Chuck Schumer. An article in The Guardian today showed that the newly elected senators (and some incumbents) aren't favoring keeping him as Majority Leader.
Schumer should take the win & retire to do what he does best - fund raise. We need an articulate pragmatic leader in the Senate. The next two years are going to be a rodeo, not a cotillion.
You might think again, whatever The Guardian may claim. Newly elected Senators (and incumbents) are far more likely to keep their mouths shut until they're in that closed-door meeting in January, where there's no secret ballot.
Personally I'm fine with Schumer. He helped orchestrate a great victory, personally recruiting some very terrific candidates in unlikely places, and winning most (but not all) of his bets. I will never really understand all this undercurrent of purity-purging, bloodletting and circular firing squads that seem to be a permanent undercurrent in the Democratic Party. It doesn't exsctly seem very helpful, to put it mildly.
"bzzzzt wrongo. my pod save america/bullwark pilled mother in central illinois said she wants, and I quote, 'every single motherfucker' sent to trial."
Indivisible has a No Schumer Coronation campaign going right now.
Caroline (and everyone), I have felt the same way. I still do, but Godess of History and Politics and friend of The Contrarian, Heather Cox Richardson, posted a video explainer the other day that gave me a realistic perspective. Her commentary is well worth everyone's time and consideration.
If Jeffries wants to be the 1st Black Maj Speaker, he better stop whimpering about accountability for breaking the law, calling it revenge. 2 years of illegality must be addressed. Elizabeth Warren.
I understand putting a Black person as Speaker, but does it have to be Jeffries? Are there any other members of the Congressional Black Caucus that would do a better job? https://cbc.house.gov/membership/
And Hispanics swung back to the Dems this week. What about a Latino(a) Speaker?
Totally with you. There are others for sure. Jeffries has been under Schumer's tutelage for years. Schumer is powerful and has "stuff" on other members. Things we can't imagine. Even the best have baggage and owe him due to previous deals. Voters have to let them know, and some of the new members, too. I was sad to hear Dr. Sayed is a little reticent about it. Mehdi called him on it. Rough holidays ahead with Mengele Miller as Facist Chief of Staff.
I'm not sure it's possible to process what this election will mean. It's so HUGE, it really defies comprehension. I am so proud to be part of this community. Proud of the work Norm and Jen do. Without all of the preparation and legal battles, we wouldn't be here. Listening to the analysis, it occurs to me that, yes, I thought I knew how important this election was---but I really didn't. Its importance stretches far into the future. And now there's this question: “Is there a chance that a Democratic Congress and a Republican White House could work together? Sure. Would that be good for the country? Depends on the topic.” I am not a forgiving person. I cannot conceive of working with Donald Trump. (Or any of the Republican members of Congress.) Good thing it's not up to me. As far as I'm concerned, some things are unforgivable. Go Scott Colom. Go Mary Peltola. Thank you, Norm and Jen.
Unfortunately, we are still at the what this election COULD mean. Unless the leadership in congress changes it's tactics, nothing will change. With the appointment of Miller as djt's keeper and mouthpiece, things are going to get even more dangerous.
How smart we were to recognize the bargain offered by The Contrarian! My $7 monthly subscription is the most effective, hard-working expenditure i make.
We the people didn't turn the country blue to play nice, reach across the aisle, and reconcile with the other side. We voted for righteous retribution and cleaning up the government like Hercules and the Augean Stables.
We want to see hearings, impeachments, and convictions!
I waited for Scott to win like sitting on a tax the whole. I’m from Pennsylvania but wanted the country to win. Congrats Scott! We knew you could do it!!
IMO, Tuesday's election was a repudiation of racism and fascism in America. It was an affirmation of our multi-ethnic, multi-racial, religiously pluralist society. We are a melting pot, not a White Christian nation.
Our challenge is building the tolerance for it to endure.
You guys are great, and you have been the heroes behind protecting our electoral system and defending our civil rights in court. Well done! However, I do not believe your ideas about how The People's mandate should be interpreted. This is not a normal administration. These people, The MAGA people who are running our nation into the ground, have attacked our democracy at its very core. They have systematically purposely undone all of our checks and balances. They have prosecuted wars illegally. They have violently attacked Americans and even murdered them. They have threatened anyone who opposed them to classify them as terrorists. They have separated children from their parents. They have colluded with the enemy. They have destroyed long-standing alliances. They have stolen money from taxpayers to enrich themselves. They have done such damage in less than two years to our nation that it will take perhaps decades to repair. The idea of reaching across the aisle is fantasy. It is Chamberlinian! Stop suggesting such a thing. Listen to Steve Schmidt's interview with Maria Shriver. He has the plan: WE MUST HOLD THESE CRIMINALS ACCOUNTABLE., ALL OF THEM! And we can do that and also right the ship as Pritzker and Van Hollen suggest. As Senator Warnock as so aptly stated, "We can chew gum and walk at the same time." So, I say stick to the litigation, that’s your bailiwick; let the planning be done by the true political strategists who've done their homework and who know the treacherous territory.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Norm and your team for all the endless work you do to keep our democracy and our freedoms!! I’m a very proud Contrarian!

Indeed.
One of the first things Jeffries said out the gate was (this via TPM via Bluesky):
"The American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf."
To which gary’s anatomy@sablaah.bsky.social replied:
"bzzzzt wrongo. my pod save america/bullwark pilled mother in central illinois said she wants, and I quote, 'every single motherfucker' sent to trial."
Indivisible has a No Schumer Coronation campaign going right now.
The same needs to be done with Jeffries.
That's not getting even. It's demanding that justice be applied equally and impartially under the law.

I still think Jeffries is a tall glass of weak tea, but if the House elects him, he'll have a chance to either sh*t or get off the pot.
Thanks. I too watched HCR's excellent video, and it opened my eyes to some stuff I hadn't realized.
I sent messages to alll NM reps and Senators yesterday telling them to throw Schumer and Jeffries in the trash. Please do the same for your state.
I was always hopeful, but unconvinced, that the American people were better than their leaders were.
Tuesday convinced me-- the people really ARE better than their leaders
Look at YOU with your smiling handsome faces!! 💙
I love Gov. Beshear's "formula": he spends 80% of his time working on what matters to 100% of his constituents.
We love you, Norm! We will keep fighting!

I call "righteous retribution" accountability!! If Ds won't do that, we'll be right back where we started before the wave!

E pluribus unum.
Best investment in democracy anyone could make 'The Contrarian'.
