Look, Mr. Stupid started as a standup comedian, and even that was a stretch for him. He's really just a blowhard who happened to ride the insult comic wave. He doesn't have insights, he has a chip on his shoulder.

When I compare him with the great George Carlin, who besides being very funny was also the classic societal gadfly, Maher looks like a piece of dogshit on the bottom of George's shoe. It makes you wonder what Bill was willing to do for stardom.

Maher has always been one of the smuggest assholes on TV. Never could stand the guy even if he occasionally said things I agreed with. This and the Trump sane-washing were all I needed to add him to my never watch again list. Not that I was watching him anymore anyway.

He is so smug and so unfunny. I did not like him before reading this and now that is amplified by 1000.

The linked article with the Ann Coulter quote is worth a hate read....

Not really curious, or even surprised. Every idiot out there with a modicum of fame has someone following them around to catch whatever dumbass thing they say or do for the clicks. I don't read most of that stuff unless it catches my attention somehow and I can see why this misogynistic crap from Maher got a mention here. It really is vile. I'll go back to ignoring him now.

Maher is a pompous ass. My wife and I used to watch fairly regularly but his positions on a number of topics over the past several have finally ended our interest. We tuned in this past week (against my better judgement) and we were both appalled by his rant on #MeToo. He definitely thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. Not. What a putz.

Same here. We watched for a while but he started to veer into some really strange opinions and his attitude towards women is truly appalling.

Maher is another example of big mouth, empty mind. Anything for laughs perhaps?

Maher got played by Trump - plain and simple. It seems being charmed by Trump carries more weight with Bill than Trump's running roughshod over our civil rights and threatening our constitutional order. He also needs a lesson in history - most brutal leaders have been described in affectionate terms until - they're not.

Maher may not be as cruel as the 34xfelon/rapist, but he's too smug and totally lacking in empathy. HBO: fire him!

Maher’s 6th-grade level idea of a funny joke and his insufferable arrogance makes this blowhard literally unwatchable. Just another rich asshole who thinks everything he spews is absolutely the truth. He had muskrat on a few years ago and his honker was so far up musk’s backside it was embarrassing to see. A previous poster mentioned George Carlin; Carlin was a comedic genius, and an adult. Maher is an idiot and a juvenile.

Maher wore out his welcome in our household a long time ago. He's just another cranky chauvinist.

I heard him speak here in Santa Barbara, maybe 6-10 years ago, and he was smug, offensive to someone in the audience, and, in line with the commentary above, so sexist about something (think it was commentary on the Me Too movement, I've blocked it), that I said to my wife- this guy is hiding something.

Maher thinks he’s smarter than anyone else. That’s why he likes tRump. He loves hacks. He loves right wingers. He a libertarian. The pot he always brags about smoking has had obvious impact on his brain function. Plus at his age cognitive decline can be a factor. He’s quick to point out others who are too old for their jobs. Maybe he’s too old…..

Maher's a bloated, egotistical punk. I love when he chastises "woke" college kids, as if they are somehow defective because they find him offensive instead of funny. Apparently he is entitled to say what ever he wants and everyone should dutifully laugh, applaud, and and send fan letters to HBO. Love when he claims he's a feminist because he criticizes burkas. Yawn.

Great article. YES, Bill Maher, please, shut up! After reading this article, I watched a clip of Maher’s take on his meeting with Trump. I also then read Larry David’s guest essay in the Times and loved it. It made me think of David’s response to the question as to what comedy he finds offensive. He answered that the only comedy he finds offensive is something that is not funny. I would put Bill Maher in this category. Never funny. Always offensive. And, sadly, stupid.

Yep. And this guy — indeed, all these guys — is the epitome of a sexist, creepy arsehole.

I watched the clip of Maher and was repulsed by his smarmy, snarky stupidity on the matter. I didn't add smug and sickening because too much alliteration ...

Nancy Arents's avatar

It wasn't even clever or remotely funny.

In summary Maher is a pompous asshole and always has been. He thinks he is brilliant but like #TACO he is not nearly as smart as he thinks he is.

Sadly I think Maher has devolved. Saw his stand up act twice just before President Felon’s first term.

He was an early voice of the resistance & we liked that he was calling out corruption in politics. Never watched Real Time. It’s true: Everything trump touches, is ruined.

He was always smug, but his smugness always was somewhat humorous. Now he is just a smug asshole. Sorry Bill, just turn off the lights and go home. Will ya please.
