Please add Eugene Robinson to the Contrarians

Why are you not speaking about the "supreme court" letting the orange felon get away with all the firing of federal employees and some other reversals of lower court verdicts?

It is absolutely outrageous how these corrupt right-wing idiots rule everything in his favor.

I agree with Jill Deutsch. Let's get Eugene Robinson on here if possible.

The market today will adsorb the Chinese tariff addition. A total of 84% on U.S. goods and agriculture. One good thing, there is plenty of room for our stock market to fall. And don’t forget to think about the cruelty from 5 men on the Supreme Court. If my brother were in that El Salvadoran prison, I don’t see how 5 men could still be on the court. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/cruel-capriciously-smelly-supreme?r=3m1bs

The discussion with Jared Bernstein was excellent. I found it very informative and even hopeful! I will look forward to the next discussion with him, and with his friends. Thank you!

In order to understand fully what is going on and why, it is imperative to focus to on the history that brought us here. There are of course many factors, and the analysis if both complex and time consuming, but nonetheless it is necessary. For it is not just Trump, Musk and their cronies, it is not even just the GOP going mad and turning into a fascist movement - there are political, social and economical reasons behind it. Unless they are confronted, the problem will not go away, for it has now spread like cancer, into the very social fabric that goes all the way to the Supreme Court. Ms. Rubin and others here, keep refusing to do this analysis, and there must be a reason for it.

One important aspect of that history - I invite the others to offer theirs. In March of 2003 the US was a dominant world economy, a factor of seven of that of China - until it was dragged into the war in Iraq by the Israeli lobby dominated by Netanyahu, who literally led the crusade in the Congress to have the US send its children to Iraq, with the promise of utopia. It was done by using the aftermath of 9/11 shock and the deliberate lies of the weapons of mass destruction, never to be found. Some 8 years later, Iraq was basically destroyed and the boomerang came back - so was the US economy, while the Chinese one blossomed. Simply, China kept investing in peaceful economy, and the US was being focused on the war which will also cost many American lives and a loss of moral compass - the rest of the world saw now the US as the invader, that it was. The estimates show that the war in Iraq cost the US some 3 trillions dollars - imagine that being invested in education, in science, in infrastructure, in health care, whatever lies at your heart.

The rest is history, we could say. The same Netanyahu, the Trump-like criminal with the self proclaimed nazi mission of the final war, while orchestrating the destruction of Gaza, is taking, slowly but surely, the US into the war on Iran. Netanyahu is a war criminal, wanted by the ICC, and without support of the US he would be prison today and no genocide would be taking place. This is tragically destroying Israel too, its democracy, its rule of law, its humanity, its peace, its sanity - and it is threatening both the democracy in the US and its economy. Unless this is faced by the society at large, and especially on the platforms such as this one, it will be hard, if possible at all, to salvage the US democracy. For it is taking us to the most frightening aspect of authoritarianism: the disappearing of people who simply show courage and humanity in exercising their free speech to help stop the onslaught of Palestinians, after decades of apartheid in the world's largest concentration camp. The disappearing of dissidents and/or activists happens only in dictatorships, please reflect on that although they are not coming for you.

Think of this too, please. When Russia attacked Ukraine back in 2022, the US rallied the world around the principles of the international law and order. The global reaction was extremely positive. with 143 countries voting in the UN General Assembly to stop the Russian invasion. It was moral, political and social victory for the US. But in December of 2023, as the world watched in horror the two months of Gaza destruction, now 151 countries sided with Russian and China, voting in the UN General Assembly to halt the onslaught of Palestinians - only 8 countries voted against, led by the US and Israel. What a loss of international leadership, of prestige, of moral right, of international leadership, and only in the span of less than two years.

In other words, the process of the US isolation started even before Trump, who is of course in his violence and insanity taking to the whole new level. It is high time to reverse that - the fight for democracy at home cannot and should not be separated from the fight for the international law and order.

Of course, we must fight for democracy on all other fronts as the leaders here do justly so, but ignoring this tragedy will become equivalent of ignoring Holocaust back in the day. If we we stay silent today, we will be complicit of genocide. If we stay silent today, tomorrow they will come for us too. This is a battle for souls, for we should be in this together, as we preach.
