When are people going to stop talking about deep cuts in services when we should be talking about scaling back the tax cuts so social service cuts are not necessary. It seems such a simple concept but I have not seen anything like that in the press

It’s ridiculous isn’t it? The solution is so stupidly obvious….only it’s not going to happen because our Congress has been bought and paid for by the 1% for whom no amount of riches are enough.

Alan, I completely agree with you, and wrote something about it elsewhere. As we all know, the key issue with Medicaid and SNAP is that Trump wants to extend the $4.5 trillion in tax cuts from his 2017 bill for rich people and corporations. And, unless it is paid for in the Big Brutal Budget Bill, some of these cuts will expire at the end of the year.

Of course, Trump could take 4.5 trillion out of his bloated defense budget or his inhumane deportation system. But, he doesn't want to or have to, because neither he nor Congressional Republicans care enough about low income people to object.

The irony, as I've written elsewhere, is that the two highest ranking GOP leaders in Congress, Speaker Johnson and House Majority Leader Scalise, represent Louisiana, which will be devastated. They have the second highest percentage of Medicaid recipients in the U.S. (31.9%), and 785,000 people are on Medicaid Expansion. About 20% of Louisianans are on SNAP, because they already have a food security problem.

I was going to write that Democratic Leadership should send Southern Democratic politicians (I was thinking of Raphael Warnock and Angie Craig (she is from Minnesota, but was born and brought up in Arkansas) to Louisiana to explain what the Republican budget bill will do, since Johnson and Scalise are lying about it. But, I just read that a group of Democrats already has written the "Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act," which is just sitting in the House. The ACT should be sent to media throughout the country, as well as being publicized on social media, and Congressional members should go forth and talk about it, in the states hardest hit. I'm going to contact some people today about it.

May 31, 2025: this comment is off subject.

Many readers have been wondering why there is such scant reporting on the reaction of Jewish Americans to Israel's genocide in Gaza. Today, there is a superb article on that subject in the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/31/jewish-americans-antisemitism-gaza-trump

I highly recommend reading this article. As I've said in one of my comments before, being pro-Gaza Palestinians does not equal being antisemitic, especially since there are many Jewish Americans who are anti-Israel's genocide in Gaza.
