"(i)t is no wonder that scientists are considering leaving for counties with less adversarial approaches to education; some countries are actively recruiting U.S. scholars, and some scholars (including personal friends and colleagues) are proclaiming loudly that the political climate in the U.S. is the reason they are leaving prestigious jobs—and the country. These threats to the stature of U.S. higher education are accelerated when the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a prestigious independent organization that advises on scientific policy, is accused of revising pending reports to remove such terms as health equity and marginalized populations, replacing them with vague language, according to a letter signed by 100 of the group’s own members. NASEM’s editing foreshadowed the case of Columbia University, which was recently told that it must put Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies under receivership—punishing faculty by stripping them of their ability to govern themselves—before it is even allowed to discuss the restoration of $400 million in federal grants. This demand to meddle in the governance of a private university is made more disturbing by the university’s recent capitulation to the administration’s demands at a speed that was startling for many faculty at Columbia and beyond."
JD Vance has publicly stated a number of times he wants to destroy the Universities as envisioned in Curtis Yarvin’s “Dark Enlightenment” Gil Duran has been writing and warning about the PayPal mafia and their goal of establishing a tech bro dictatorship in the U.S. and the rest of the world by destroying the liberal democracies. Shane Almgren has written a snarkier summary—both are on SubStack.
Congressman Jamie Raskin has name checked Curtis Yarvin as the ideological father for Elon Musk’s efforts to destroy the U.S. government and replace it with a corporatized dictatorship. He did this at the April 5 “Hands Off” rally at the Washington Monument in DC. It should be no surprise that Elon has been in frequent contact with Putin.
Marie Antoinette & her "Let them eat cake" is generous compared to these guys. Krugman on Trump's Third-Worlding of America or how to destroy 80 years of credibility in less than 3 months:
Major news media organizations sanitized Donald Trump’s incoherence and downplayed his extreme policy positions during the 2024 campaign even now. Despite the unprecedented craziness of the past 10 days, many observers assert that Trump has backed down on tariffs and will speedily make trade deals. However, savvy traders have realized there is no coherent economic strategy, and bond and currency markets are signaling a major loss of faith in America. https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-third-worlding-of-america

Help me understand the problem existing between privacy and polls. I am old, and do not want to have pollsters asking me on my cell phone, especially when I did not give them my number, whether I am a life-long Democrat, and who I voted for. I feel that privacy is sacrosanct. Is this no longer true? I want all these organizations demanding money to leave my cell phone alone. I can go to ActBlue and give, without having to tell them. Each of us has to support the things we think are most in line with what we believe and think helpful! Bullying and trying to co-opt the language of political discussion is becoming rampant.
Not a word about the US turning into a dictatorship, slowly but surely - people being literally abducted in the streets by masked agents for exercising free speech. The judge now allowing the deportation Mahmoud Khalil without a due process, with a similar fate probably expecting Rumeysa Ozturk. This is happening just for speaking out in defence of Palestinians rights to exist, and it leads to the end of the rule of law.
This is not a way to defend democracy, waiting for them to come after you or me - these are text book examples how democracies turn into authoritarian regimes. The consequences will be dramatic in the long run. The education and science are the core of democracy, the only true hope for the future, and both have been the pride of the US, the whole world kept dreaming to pursue their studies and/or careers there - but this way there will be great setbacks. Now my students, even the very best ones, opt for Europe or Japan and Korea for their PhDs.
It is genuinely hard to fight fascists since they emerge when a country is already in a deep social, political or economical crisis. The US has been heading towards this constitutional crisis for a long time, and its democracy is now threatened on all fronts. But this lack of solidarity and empathy, this lack of care for human rights and civil liberties on a platform like this one is deeply disturbing. as much as the ongoing fascist takeover by Trump and his cronies.
My mood fortunately won’t be dictated by my phone notifications. Though it’s easy to become discouraged, I have far too much ahead right now to allow that sentiment to sink in. Holy Week is here and I feel gratitude!

How do I send/share some photos of people protesting on April 5?

Any value to using Mu$k rather than his name in print...thinking George Lakoff and how brains work?
