The Obama Presidential Center officially opens this week. The history of America’s presidential libraries began with the president historians consistently rank as one of the greatest: FDR.
I watched the dedication ceremony in its entirety, and I still am awed at what the Obamas have done with their center. I am so proud! So proud. And so grateful, for all I saw and heard and learned today. Hope is alive, and I am raised up seeing the celebration and hearing the music and seeing the effect of all of this on the faces of the people there and, I'm sure, on those folks who watched on TV like me. The enormity of what this center means and will do brings tears to my eyes and touches my heart. Thank you to the Obamas for doing this and helping us remember what is true.
I watched it all too, and shed a few tears at the beauty, joy and justness of it all. I thought the "formers" (Merkel, Mattei etc) was a top idea. I often think of Mrs Merkel.
We intend to visit Chicago in the near future, and our must-see is the Obama Center. When we were last in the city, we walked through the University of Chicago campus, and in the Rockefeller Church there was an organ concert with a prominent organist. So much to see and so in this all-American city!
Thank you for this inside look and preview, and also for the photo that does the center justice. South Chicago is the perfect place for this memorial library, which reminds us of what the Obamas brought to the presidency and our nation. This makes up for the insulting piece in The Atlantic.
The Contrarian does a great job providing such an interesting variety of writing like this one about the new Obama center. The piece is not snarky or worshipful (to be clear: snarky belongs in takes having to do with the current abomination in the Oval Office) and it highlights its assets as a place to understand and celebrate our democracy and diverse civic communities
Thank you for the preview and great description....I would love to visit Obama's Foundation and Center. I did visit Carter's Library and it was so interesting. It would be fun to compare their replicas of the Oval Office. I think they all would be worthwhile visiting for adults and children.
