Two remarkable women have left us in the past few weeks. Dolly and Gloria. We were lucky to have had them with us to do their extraordinary work that leaves an inspiring legacy that will live on for future generations. God Bless both of them.
Gloria Steinem helped me understand and embrace feminism and why women deserved equality. She has been an icon throughout my seven decades of life and someone for whom I will always be very grateful.
1971. College freshman. Newsweek (I think) ran an article about MS magazine coming down the pipeline. Every month I would stop at the local newsstand to see whether it had arrived yet.
Months passed.
Got my first copy and immediately sent in the attached subscription flyer. Such a breath of fresh air.
Thank you, Gloria Steinem, for lighting the way, and showing us that “choice” doesn’t always mean doing the most liberal thing. It just means choosing the path that’s right for you. Rest in peace.
Met her once. I was a college student and she was in her thirties. It was the very definition of tongue-tied. And she was very gracious to that clueless male.
I subscribed to Ms. for many years. Gloria was such an inspiration. She transformed my thinking, and that of so many other women. There it was, the patriarchy, sitting right in front of us, and we couldn't even see it until she and a few other amazing women pointed it out to us.
Thank you for sharing those photos and what she meant to you. We have people like you to carry on her legacy. Unfortunately, you have your work cut out for you these days.
This is a painful loss. Her compassion, empathy, humility and warmth were unforgettable, especially in such a leader. (I met her once at Skidmore College in the 1980s). She was and will continue to be an inspiration.
Why does death keep coming for the wrong people? This loss is painful. May she rest in power. May her memory be a blessing to all.
Quite a legacy. I admired her immensely.

I wasn't prepared for how deeply Gloria Steinem's death hit me.
She led an incredible, meaningful life, and made a difference for so many women

A life well lived and fruitful and generous. She was in the forefront of leading us into a more promising land.
