This is evil. My daughter brings her 3 year old son to protests. I feel such rage at the depravity of tear gassing children. Of making children so afraid and of children seeing the adults who they look to for safety not able to protect them. And what story to tell your small child about what happened.

And local police did nothing!!! What's with that!!!

Really.

Our governor and mayor need to take a cue from their counterparts in Minnesota, who stood up for their people. It's illegal to yell fire in a crowded movie theater...isn't it illegal to fire chemical agents and smoke bombs into a crowd that is trapped between two buildings? The police should have at least been out there distributing cones throughout the crowd to cover the smoke bombs when they landed.

Susan, agree. Maybe this will rouse your governor and mayor. I am so sorry.

There are plenty of Republican voters in Portland. Is this okay with you? Got family values? Any values at all???

Republicans don't read The Contrarian.

I was there, at the rally at Elizabeth Caruthers Park and then marched. There were many thousands of us jammed shoulder to shoulder. I wasn't near the front, so it took a long time to get moving. By the time we approached the turn near ICE, we could see the smoke and hear the flash-bangs. Since I'm an elderly person with asthma, getting over a cold, I didn't go all the way to Bancroft but cut east through a little plaza to get out of there. Many of us were turning around then. I have several friends, all in their 70s and 80s, who were gassed. I guess it needs to be said, all peaceful. Thanks for your coverage, Tim. I parked on the east side and walked across the Tillicum Crossing bridge, and then of course had to walk back.

Thank you for being a patriot. I hope your friends and all the marchers are alright.

Thanks! My friends are all okay... it's just so shockingly different from the vast majority of large, peaceful marches in Portland.

I'm a local too, now living in East County. I hit the weekly Saturday protest in Estacada because I think it's important that the magas out this way see people standing up for democracy. So far, the worst violence is some jerk in a pickup "coal-rolling" the protesters lining the sidewalk. On the flip side, though, there is a guy with a giant sign on his truck that says RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES who always shows up.

How dare they? They're trying to "teach people a lesson." Well, they won't get very far with Americans. We started out throwing tea in the river and we'll get our democracy back and rebuild.

Thank you for the coverage. ICE is sickening. This is not acceptable.

Thank you so much for brining Tim to us from Portland! Excellent reporting and so important! Contrarians, you are showing journalism how it is done.

Time for the Oregon National Guard to be called.

Thank you for your reports from Portland, Tim. Glad to see the bike ride in memory of Alex Pretti. The naked bike riders will probably ride in memory of Alex sometime in the not so distance future.

ICE continues its cruel ways by gassing peaceful protesters! Maddening!😡

hahaha the pro-life crowd gassing children give me a fucking break

Wow more proof they have no idea what they are doing.........................time to defund ICE.............

KnockKnockGreenpeace's avatar

Or they know exactly what they are going. Abolish!

It will continue, and apparently the Republican persons on the street, in Portland, are content with the face-eating leopard, chewing on their lips.

ICE is to present day America what the SA were to Nazi Germany: state-sanctioned murder-in-the-streets. WELCOME TO THE FOURTH REICH, AMERICA !!!

Those fascist ICE goons probably expect to get a medal and a bonus.

I expect the orange boss of this bunch to give them a medal... but no bonus.

Maybe he can pass along that hand-me-down Nobel.

LATEST from NYT, hooray: "In Portland, Ore., a federal judge temporarily barred federal officers from the use of gas or other crowd dispersal weapons at an ICE facility in the city unless they can prove the person they’re using the weapons against poses an “imminent threat.” The ruling comes in a class-action lawsuit filed by demonstrators who say they have been repeatedly gassed and hit with pepper balls, rubber bullets and other crowd control weapons for trespassing and blocking traffic during protests. The judge imposed a two-week restraining order and plans to hear testimony in the case in March." [NYT]
