Please stop referring to the National Guard and its members as some sort of inanimate object. The Guard is made up of your friends and neighbors. Membership is voluntary; folks who sign up do so, in large part, to serve their neighbors, and Guard members are subject to the same focus on protecting the Constitution as their active-duty colleagues are. As someone who spent over four decades in the Department of Defense, as an active-duty airman, reservist, and civil servant, I tell you those who have not served have no idea how seriously members of our Armed Forces take their oaths of office. If the current administration continues to attempt to corrupt the military, you're going to see a mass exodus AND internal resistance far greater than you might imagine.
I have nothing against the individals in the Guard. I do, however, disapprove of the way that they are being used against my fellow Americans. If what Trump and Hegseth are doing with them isn't illegal, (and that has yet to be finally decided) it's certainly unethical and disgraceful.

Trump is more like Putin as he pays no attention to the GOP-led Congress, which is complicit, and the Supreme Court (now the Supine Court) that he often ignoress. It's also interesting that Mr. Kalb made no mention of the SS in Germany, founded by Hitler in 1925. It gained power as the years went on.
He wants his own private army, yes. Of course. He's wanted that since he first infested the Oval Office. And he's being backed by gazillionaires that want the same thing. His army is/will be their army. And they will have all the power, and We The People can go pound sand.

The national guard has “strings” - control by states and rules as does the military.
ICE is his way around the rules. He is using immigration to build his untrained and violent Gestapo. That was his trick to build a Gestapo in America.
-The $170 Billion budget for I E and detention centers and wall etc bus ALL be cut to the bone. NO BUDGET AGREEMENT until that $170B is cut out.
-that is the single most important thing we can do to protect Americans, democracy and elections
