Especially in this day and age, when one hand-made cardboard sign can go viral in a flash, protest is critical. Out of many, many worthy contenders, my favorite is still an old lady on No Kings Day carrying one with You Know Who's ugly, sneering demented face on it, with the simple words:

"DOES THIS ASS MAKE MY COUNTRY LOOK SMALL?"

Chris Dortch's avatar

I'm a Democrat, but I'll be damned if I'm not sometimes disgusted by the passivity and sense of decorum some of our leaders in Congress have displayed, pretty much the last 50 years. Unlike we the people, these elected officials have failed to see the Republicans slowly taking over state houses, driving up income inequality, gerrymandering, blocking useful legislation by Democratic presidents, stacking the SCOTUS, etc. They thought our guadrails will hold. They didn't count on a scoundrel like Trump and the weird hold he seems to have on Congress. We need to keep hammering our representatives, especially in red states like mine, to let them know we are watching and we won't abide by any more BS.

Monroe Morgret's avatar

The Democrats need a Newt Gingrich. The Democrats also need some leaders with national exposure. It appears that both Pritzker and Newsome are ready to fill that role.

Marliss Desens's avatar

We do not need a Newt Gingrich.

What we need, and have, if we will look and listen, is a number of Democrats raising their voices and doing whatever they can to disrupt the Republican agenda. We will get out of this mess by many people taking action against the current regime, not through the actions of one or two "leaders."

JA's avatar

Agree with you that Newt is not a who we need! He is a GAG!

It's Come To This's avatar

Thank you. We need Newt Gingrich like we need a chancre sore. There is NOTHING about that ancient, dried-up old sack of arrogant excrement I want to see copied in today's Democratic Party.

Monroe Morgret's avatar

In the 50's and 60's we had "many people taking action". But we also had leaders with national exposure who brought a lot of attention (Johnson's attention, for instance) to the many people taking action.

patricia's avatar

gingrich was and is a jerk

JA's avatar

Put your confidence in both of them BUT we need more to stand up and be heard!

Pritzker is well seasoned and could handle the MAGAs and the sluggish Republicans with ease. He is smart, articulate, and very capable! Shed some “good light” on this very patriotic man and possible leader! Good will come from it!

C C's avatar

Newt Gingrich is a HIGHLY immoral, arrogant, vicious, hypocritical, loudmouthed liar.

We do need leaders who speak THE TRUTH on behalf of our democracy and explain the existential need to vote for Democrats in order to save and rebuild American democracy.

The only quality Gingrich has that would be helpful to Democrats is his ability to get media coverage.

However, since Gingrich got that coverage by being one of the most dispicable and disreputable, lying politicians in recent history, it would be much better and more accurate to suggest someone of higher ethics and character than Gingrich, as an example of an energetic politician who can attract media attention.

Gingrich was the front-runner (to many observors) for the king of lowlifes in the American political swamp, until Trump and his magnetic ability to attract political lackeys capable of engaging in bottomless corruption for a pat on the head, potential financial gain and the thrill of proximity to power...even lawless, corrupt, "willing to placate and/or pardon a monstrous, convicted sex-trafficker and sexual abuser" type of power.

There are plenty of great possibilities to lead the Dems in '28, but you have stumbled upon - perhaps deliberately - the donkey in the room, and that is, while I would love a woman president, it seems clear that we can't get one for one reason or another. My female best buddies all agree that we will have to have a man to lead us out of our hellish pit in 2028. I HATE that this is the reality we face. Misogyny is our hidden national disease. It runs a close, too close, second to racism. We can't fix it in the 3 1/2 years that we have. Trust me.

Tim Matchette's avatar

No, we don't. My feelings on that bottom feeder is that he's not completely worthless, he can always serve as a bad example.

Marti Brown, MSN, NP-C's avatar

Ugh! Gingrich is a sleaze bag! The US doesn’t need any more of his types. Please…..

donna woodward's avatar

Not Newsome! He's another pretty face who's trying to be ready for prime time come 2028. He' s more about personal ambition than about public service. He's Cuomo light. We can do better. Pritzker e.g.

Lets talk about Newsome and Pritzker and forget the gingrich part of the post.

@ChrisDortch - I can relate to your (sometimes) disgust and I agree that the Democratic Party’s apparent impotence against the rise of fascism has been going on “pretty much the last 50 years” -- certainly the last 45.

Given how ineffective the party has been, even/especially when it was ostensibly in control of the executive branch, I think it's worth considering that the lack of pushback has been a case of outright, if not always conscious, collaboration.

Because a rising totalitarian regime needs to present a veneer of democracy, there is the opportunity in an “opposition” party for a comfortable, even lucrative, career in politics -- as long as the office holder doesn't rock the boat too hard. And for the last few years it occurs to me that too many comfortably situated Democrats are paying lip service to antifascism, but ultimately vote to preserve the increasingly anti-democratic status quo that allows them to enjoy wealth and privilege.

On the corruption issue, the "gift" of the old Boeing is not only a gift to the President (that won`t stand under the next President), but it has also been noted that the DoD will have to spend $1 billion to refurbish it for Presidential use. So he is accepting a bribe and asking US taxpayers to pay for it.

Anne Pierce's avatar

The plane should be fixed just about when Trump leaves office, however that happens, and the new Boeing planes will be ready then. So we will have three Air Force Ones that we don't need, and Trump will try to take the grifted one with him.

Wendy Shelley's avatar

Just make sure all the goodies are taken out of the plane before allowing him to take it and use it. With any luck, he will be dead.

John Ranta's avatar

Trump has several unregulated slush funds, into which favor-seekers can make unlimited payments, and with which he can do whatever he wants. His crypto. His inaugural committee. And his library. He’s taken in billions $$ so far, with no oversight and little reporting. Stunning levels of corruption.

donna woodward's avatar

And all those pleas for donations when he was being "prosecuted," "assassinated,", or otherwise maligned. What scares me most is the power that that money gives him to buy publicity, buy votes, rig elections, corrupt election processes and officials, and ensure that he, his clones, even his children, will lead this country for years to come.

Here's a detailed breakdown of the contributions and potential violations related to gifts—especially coin-based or cash donations—made to Donald Trump and his family, both during his presidency and in the four years prior:

🪙 Trump Meme Coin Contributions and Legal Scrutiny

What is it?

• The TRUMP memecoin is a Solana-based cryptocurrency promoted by Donald Trump in early 2025.

• It’s marketed as a digital collectible celebrating Trump’s leadership, with slogans like “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT” and “WINNING!”.

Ownership Structure:

• The coin is owned by CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of the Trump Organization.

• CIC Digital is 100% owned by the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, with Trump as the sole beneficiary.

Legal Concerns:

• Public Citizen, a watchdog group, filed a formal complaint with the DOJ and the Office of Government Ethics.

• Alleged violations include:

• Solicitation of gifts under 18 U.S.C. § 201 and 5 C.F.R. § 2635.

• Potential breach of the Emoluments Clause, which prohibits federal officials from receiving gifts or payments from foreign states.

• The memecoin is not considered a tangible product or investment, raising concerns that it functions as a personal donation mechanism.

Foreign Influence Risks:

• Because crypto transactions are anonymous, watchdogs warn that foreign actors could use the coin to funnel money to Trump without disclosure.

Here’s a draft advocacy letter you can personalize and send to your congressional representatives to support Emoluments Clause reforms:

[Your Name]

[Your Address]

[City, State, ZIP Code]

[Email Address]

[Date]

The Honorable [Representative/Senator Name]

[Office Address]

[City, State, ZIP Code]

Dear [Representative/Senator Name],

I am writing to urge you to support and advance legislation that strengthens enforcement of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clauses—critical safeguards against corruption and foreign influence in our highest offices.

Recent events have exposed alarming gaps in our ability to hold presidents and federal officials accountable for accepting gifts, payments, or benefits from foreign and domestic entities. The lack of statutory clarity and judicial precedent has allowed potential violations to go unaddressed, undermining public trust and the integrity of our democratic institutions.

I strongly support proposals such as the Presidential Ethics Reform Act and the creation of a comprehensive Emoluments Act, which would:

• Explicitly define “emoluments” to include profits from business transactions, crypto assets, and licensing deals.

• Require full disclosure and congressional approval of any gifts or payments from foreign governments.

• Mandate divestment from business interests that pose conflicts of interest.

• Establish an independent ethics office to monitor and enforce compliance.

These reforms are not partisan—they are constitutional. The Founders included the Emoluments Clauses to ensure that public servants remain loyal to the nation, not to personal gain or foreign powers. It is time Congress gave these provisions real effect.

As a constituent, a veteran, and someone deeply committed to transparency and accountability, I ask you to stand with those working to restore ethical governance. Please support legislation that enforces the Emoluments Clauses and protects our democracy from undue influence.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

If you'd like help tailoring this for a specific representative or committee—such as Rep. Jamie Raskin or Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who are leading reform efforts—I’d be glad to assist.

Thank you for presenting these facts on his corruption, at least some of it. There is always more... . This is a side issue, but he also extended for six months the secret service protection afforded all his adult children, and even some of his cabinet cronies, costing the taxpayers more than $1million. Oh, and of course he made them stay in properties he owns and the taxpayers paid these costs, also. There is no end to his venality, his groveling for every last penny he can find in a sewer. Not a very presidential look.

Louise's avatar

I believe I'm capable of writing my own letter. Thank you, nonetheless for this helpful offer.

Corruption is seen and heard! And, ALLOWED?

Marliss Desens's avatar

No library for Trump. Instead, we have a museum of the insanity and corruption because Trump's re-election shows how short memories are.

Finn Frock's avatar

I don't think he can spell library!

DisplayL's avatar

neither can those that voted for him.

DisplayL's avatar

does one need a plane in one's 'Library' ?

Anne Pierce's avatar

Well, if he follows the law, the Air Force, which currently owns it, will have to somehow transfer ownership to him or his "library." I have no idea how that could happen. Or he just ignores the law.

Anca Vlasopolos's avatar

His "library" will be a gilded hangar.

patricia's avatar

John Ranta's avatar

You answered your own question. Trump has already violated dozens of laws. One more isn’t going to make a difference. He is taking the plane with him when he goes.

Anne Pierce's avatar

Sadly, I expect you are correct.

Marliss Desens's avatar

we need to make sure that does not happen. Trump owes the country a LOT of money.

John Ranta's avatar

How do you propose to do that?

patricia's avatar

The plan is fixed! Trump won another battle and the tax payers get no choice but to pay!

Of course, construction of two more new AF1 s is underway! How many planes are going to be paid by the tax payers while Trump tossed his grifting in our faces?

Golf course$, bit coin$, endle$$ weekend vacay$, ball room$, and roses garden$?

There should be no question as to the corruption and our country is broken. I don’t know how to allocate my fury these days at the apathetic citizens who don’t give an F about what’s going on and won’t inform themselves, the mainstream media that is a complete failure, the members of all three branches of government who enable this corruption, or Trump himself and his family as the beneficiaries of all of it. I truly don’t know how to keep my mental health while watching my country disintegrate, and the possibility of watching all my dreams die, as I approach retirement age. I have anger and disgust and contempt for all of the idiots who continue to destroy this country some days. I don’t know what to do with myself.

JA's avatar

Alene, you are not alone in your thoughts! Our nation is in a constant turmoil and passive uprising! But one thing, we are all in this together. We must keep resisting and objecting to this endless Trump corruption. It is eating away at our fine democracy, and we should admit it!

L.D.Michaels's avatar

The next Democratic administration should sue the Trump organized crime family under RICO to recover all of their ill-gotten gains, in addition to bringing criminal proceedings against them.

Absolutely. All the enablers also belong in prison and penniless.

The 3.5 "rule" requires sustained let me say it again sustained protests of that magnitude for months. We can do that. If half the people who honk and thumbs up at rallies showed up at the next for a virtuous cycy of growth we'd be there. After you thumbs, up show up.

Me too, brilliant 🏆.

Mrs. Dogood's avatar

This is so spot on. The Dems need to stop being the “anti-Trump” party and become the “American Values” party. Corruption on this scale has the power to rally. At some point the MAGA excuse for accepting the corruption of Trump of “well the Dems did it” will start to increasingly sound stupid even to them.

MLT's avatar

My constant concern is this: We already have many, many laws that this administration is breaking and simply ignoring. We don't so much need new laws to layer on top of existing laws (eg another law that might say what the Emoluments clause already says).

What we need is ENFORCEMENT.

Maureen Dorsey's avatar

The supreme court has already given the office of the presidency a huge pass. I am unclear how any kind of legislation would reign in the corruption.

JA's avatar

This Supreme Court is as corrupt as the Executive branch and the Trump regime!

The justices have given Trump complete approval and added more and more powers to the office-the Constitution be damned! Granted IMMUNITY? Why and what! NO President has ever needed immunity before Trump?

JA's avatar

Unfortunately, the MAGAs and limp, scared Republicans are ruling the roost! They will not support or vote for a recognition of this corruption. Trump has every one of them around their neck!

Democrats and Independents MUST turn out in the next election to VOTE like our way of life depends on it! Because it does. Lick those far right, no-counts to the curb! Be decisive and determined to hold on to our precious DEMOCRACY! Can we count on YOU? WE are in this together!

Randi Hacker's avatar

Olga Lachman: Eric and Donald Trump Jr. are backing New America Acquisition I Corp., a $300 million SPAC targeting U.S. manufacturing firms. As advisers, they received millions of founder shares that could be worth millions post-merger, adding to their ventures in crypto, firearms, and tech.

Why It Matters: This is raw corruption. Trump’s sons are positioned to cash in on policies their father controls, continuing to use public office as a private moneymaking machine. It’s a continued repeat of Trump's schemes that sell political influence for personal gain.

One can be both outraged and amazed at the over-the-top two facedness of the ever reliable James Comer investigating only democrats in relation to Epstein. And in sending the Deputy AG to cut side deals with Maxwell in exchange for silence and then planning to attend a cover-up strategy session with the AG and VP in the VP's residence. Oh... and then there's the money for the Trump family from meme coins, foreign countries (airplanes), taxpayer expense paid golfing trips to Scotland, and on and on.

We need to find and support GOP grown-ups, wherever they are currently hiding, and encourage them, plead with them, to come out of hiding and restore our country's moral fiber and the allegiance to our Constitution. James Comer, Gym Jordan, JD Vance, Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche, Mike Johnson all have their reserved seats in ignominy.
