If the Democrats blow this chance to bring the hammer down on these fascists, they’ll never hold a majority again in my lifetime. We are angry and we are entrusting them one more time. The weakness of Jeffries and Schumer concerns me. I resent that we’re seemingly stuck with them.
"Aside from a new president, the most effective and entirely justified remedy for such widespread, shameless abuse of the justice system is impeachment of Attorney General Todd Blanche."
That's a very nice thought. I am going to fantasize that it happens, and that it sets an example for all future fascist-adjacent lawyers to stay between the lines.
During this stressful week before the midterm elections, it's nice to think that JUSTICE for some of these blatant criminals may be just around the corner.
I do agree that this may be our last chance, but I have to temper my disappointment with Democrats. On the one hand, it's true that, in response to rampant Reaganoia decades ago, they abandoned support for working Americans in favor of triangulation and identity politics. On the other hand, Citizens United put them in a tough spot. It now takes incredible amounts of money to be competitive when they're faced with practically unlimited dark money on the other side. Then, too, are they wrong to hold onto a certain decorum in hopes of restoring a functioning government? One aspect of Magaloid rule I would like to see end is this whole idea of government-as-knife-fight, where norms are to be broken and rules ignored.
Yes, Judge Reyes patience should be at an end and if the DoJ shows up in court again with a similar flimsy argument she needs to lower the boom. I think she should have done it already. Same with the other cases. The pattern is clear and judges should respond accordingly. Failing to do so is encouraging further DoJ malfeasance.
I totally agree that there should be personal, targeted consequences to repeatedly violating court orders and decisions. Trump and his minions don't care how much taxpayers pay for these litigation adventures. Let's give the perps some skin in the game.
I’m starting to feel like the judges are parents of teenagers, POWERLESS when there is no respect. Of course Todd Blanche and the rest of the administration are the teenagers.
For all those law firms out there (at least those who have not capitulated to the regime): If any so-called lawyer applies for employment at your firm, that worked at the DOJ and presented bogus cases before judges: Please show them the door. They should not be a part of any reputable law firm.
To state bar associations: the aforementioned lawyers must be disbarred.
I’m all in favor of impeachment of Todd Blanche. He is nothing more than a Trump lapdog. I hope the next Congress will do just that. As far as indictments of James Comey and stripping Ilhan Omar of her citizenship this is blatantly harassment.
Oh clutch my pearls. A sanction. Gasp. Until DOJ's leaders are jailed, they will ignore any sanctions, any contempt rulings that are not accompanied by time in the slammer. These are fascists who do not recognize constitutional law. I guess we really cannot shoot them, but so many of us are so damn angry.... (And don't get me started on the timorous Jeffries and Schumer.)
"The range of abusive, nonsensical actions is breathtaking:"
No kidding. The bullet-pointed actions are the equivalent of an aircraft throwing chaff to deflect and/or confuse a launched air-to-air missile. In this case, it's a crazed lost-cause defense against the indefensible. Either the department of justice (no caps intentional) needs to start producing solid evidence and stop presenting sloppy charges that clog the courts, or be sanctioned for perverting justice. This is what we get when an addle-pated revenge demanding president gets control of a department that is no longer interested in the people's justice.
Not only should those attorneys suffer professional sanctions, but the Federal Government should also be required to pay the legal fees of the people and organizations who are opposing those shysters.
And as usual the taxpayers end up footing the bill. Pity there isn't axway to make Trump pay out of his own pocket, but all that cash is in Swiss or Caribbean bank accounts.
Trump &. Co projection of & gaslighting with their grift fraud & serial criminality is endless.
Trump officials charged 180 noncitizens with voter fraud. None of the cases includes allegations of an organized effort to draw noncitizens to the polls just confusion over the rules. https://wapo.st/3U2zBqB
Meanwhile,Trump admin opens arms & rolls out red carpets for dictators & organized crime families. Brazilian judge orders investigation into JD Vance Rockbridge donor network for illegal foreign contributions to the Bolsanaro campaign. Bolsonaro was already under investigation for his ties to a banker accused of involvement in an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud and to a man suspected of laundering money tied to Brazil’s betting industry. https://wapo.st/4kjdiY6
Bottom line the president now has immunity and the ability to sell pardons(thanks to the republican-fascist party and the corrupt supreme court),plus the control of all federal law enforcement is controlled by republican-fascist goose stepping loyalists not interested in the rule of law leaves the American people with serious considerations for future actions to defend our constitution and rule of law.
Yes, sanction the fools. Strip them of their licenses to practice law, just like you can strip a malpracticing physician of his right to practice medicine. And then, lock ‘em up.
The Oregon state medical board can quickly revoke a physician’s license under emergency circumstances. We are experiencing emergency situations in the legal profession.
Ms Jennifer, great article and I hope you publish it in the Congressional record, as many prominent legal schools and newspapers around the country!! This shit has got to stop!! Perhaps citizen groups should sue DOJ en mass to point out these ridiculous, time wasting and taxpayer money abusing law suits to keep traitor trump happy on his revenge tour!! Also send a note to prominent historians to insure this is NOT repeated in future administrations!! Thanks for pulling all of this together!! One knows something is wrong when justice is NOT served but turning into a joke in this country now!! Injustice department indeed!! Hugs and be careful out there!!
We should evolve our constitutional checks on tyrannical excursions by the president, such as they are, on reactions to the same sort of things done by Kings John, Charles I, and James II. We clearly need more and better focused ones to tamp down the sort of presidential behavior we now see almost daily. In other words, we improve our constitiional protections in reaction to acts of tyrants.
In short, our constitutional protections evolve as they must to protect us from adverse innovations by our leaders. We can hope. But the reluctance of our legislatures to deal appropriately with what has been happening is discouraging.
The near universal statements by current Republican candidates that they "work across the aisle" suggests that they realize that Trumpism is dyng if not alreasdy dead and that the population will be looking to those who somehow make it to re-election to help clear out the mess we have now.
A sea change will be required which I fear is beyond us; the replacement of legislators who value their "jobs" ab ove their integrity with citizens who will rise tro the challenge and do what must be done.
(this thing needs to be edited back into coherence. I'll get to it)
While I'm at it, another fix we need is to get rid of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering creates districts where the election is determined in the primary because one party will assuredly dominate the general. The ill effect of this is that the more radical candidate is likely to prevail in the primary. The evil seems more prevalent in Republican domianant districts but I don't doubt that Democratic districts are subject to the same disease.
Obviously, I lean centrist which I suppose is part of being 84.
"The range of abusive, nonsensical actions is breathtaking"
I think that the list provided is way too short. Shouldn't Judge James Boasberg's order to turn the deportation planes around be on it?
Anyway, I've been disappointed that the courts have been reluctant to declare the Trump administration to be in contempt. There are also plenty of DOJ lawyers that should be disbarred. It takes so long to do that - consider Jeffery Clark. He's still not been disbarred for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, despite the D.C. Bar’s Board on Professional Responsibility recommendation. When they say that the "wheels of justice grind slowly", they had it right.

I stir my coffee every morning to the mantra
“Karma come quickly, Justice be done, highest good for everyone!” So, basically, I fantasize every morning that Justice will be served.
I love that!
If they blow this, it’s time for a new party. I expect and demand the application of implacable consequences for the rampant flouting of the law.

Really, take their pay!
Or freedom.

John Eastman, who lost his license over the first Trump election denial, is now petitioning to have his license reinstated.
If only our top law officials were lawful.

It takes a long time to remove a doctor’s license, even for egregious medical malpractice.
The Oregon state medical board can quickly revoke a physician’s license under emergency circumstances. We are experiencing emergency situations in the legal profession.
Oregon has a lot of good things going for it, and that’s a good thing.

One such consitutionakl improvement might be to remove the DOJ from the purview of the President. Make it Constitutionally independent.
And of course get rid of Citizens United. duh!!

YES. Let’s persecute, oops prosecute, the perpetrators of illegality in this Department of Injustice!
