The Trump regime treats national history and foreign policy (and all else) like the tech bros treat their industry and the economy: move fast and break things. Unfortunately, they have no idea how things actually work, and therefore no long-term plan that is not shadowed by the risk of catastrophe.
Good for IL. The governor has demonstrated again that he is a leader who actually cares about citizens. One question is why wait 72 hours to report critical safety issues? 24 or 48 hours seems more expedient.

It points out exactly why governmental controls are necessary when you’re dealing with a nation of some 335 million citizens and a world population of literally billions of people. The GOP standard of reducing governmental controls should be left in the dust. We cannot afford to let a few bad players become the overarching controllers of world destiny. The next Congress should remove the current president and begin a straightforward march towards protecting the country and then the world from sure disaster. This is not a party line issue. It is a world issue and it’s a wonderful opportunity to turn around the loss of stature of our country. We have it in our means to make this happen. We must make this happen. Vote! This election might be the most important in the country’s history and certainly in our lives.

The current (and mid-future) state of AI will NOT extinguish humanity. This is a sales pitch, just like the old carnival barkers would not allow women and children into the circus tent to see the monster that was too terrifying for them to behold.
Current AI has the potential for a lot of mischief, but we ascribe way too much power to this thing that it simply does not have. Should it be regulated? Absolutely. And we should start enforcing current regulations by throwing the CEOs of the AI companies into prison for their technology under their watch hacking lots of websites, just like we would do for humans who did the same. I guarantee that if Altman has to spend any time in Leavenworth, the reports of OpenAI agents "going rogue" and hacking websites will drop to zero right quick.
Disclosure: I am a computer programmer with 45+ years of experience, and a MS in Computer Science, who deals with LLMs daily.
And remember, the AI didn't "hallucinate" - the word-guessing program gave you a wrong answer.
It still is desirable to be proactive in both education and regulation. As for why they continue to build, consider greed to be one motivation. If investors provide funds, the developers will come.

"Self-regulation" i.e. "We pinky-swear that we won't do anything wrong. Trust us!" is not regulation. This is exactly the role for government, along with actual consequences. Like any other business.
These guys are depending on the fact that it takes years to come up with new regulation over emerging technologies. But while we're waiting for new legislation, there are a lot of laws that we can apply right now, like the anti-hacking laws that are on the books. We only need the will to do so.

AI is vastly artificial. Although your Copilot tells you it's "thinking," it is not. Although it calls you by name and pretends to care about your desires, it is an algorithm. For people to believe that a data miner is human and deserves to exist and make money for people is even more ludicrous than believing a "billionaire" with several bankruptcies will run one of the world's largest economies well.

No mater how important and appealing stories about: AI danger; White House press access; The Jack Smith hearing fiasco; whatever may be. just mention them now and pivot to the seminal issues, full analysis can wait until after the midterms.
The danger isn't "shit" if the developers themselves are calling warnings. What is stupid is what Trump is doing by ignoring it. Granted, all of the other issues that you mentioned are important, but so is this.
