Neither Musk nor Altman, nor any of the other "entrepreneurs" involved in AI are to be trusted. Their only interest in AI is the greed to become trillionaires, gazillionaires, or whatever. AI will never be used to the benefit of all humanity.

I think AI will turn out to be downfall of humankind, just like the unlimited greed going along with it.

AI may well destroy us if we don't manage to do it to ourselves first.

Potter's avatar

Artificial implies made by man therefore if AI destroys us it is still us doing it or having done it.

Steve 218's avatar

True that, though I was getting to the point where AI may initiate its own direct actions. We would analhilate ourselves with pollution and/or ignoring climate change.

Potter's avatar

It would be us humans doing it either way. The *fear* is that AI will initiate its own actions and we will have no control... like the Frankenstein monster. So far it has not happened. There is so much artificial, man made, that can destroy us or that is working to do that- as you say. Also, like what happened 66 million years ago when an asteroid caused global extinction, we can be destroyed by forces of nature, out of our control too.. But AI whatever comes from it is manmade, (caused by humans). The Prime Mover is nature... in this instance human nature.

AI currently has no controls put on it. It can already be used for malicious purposes. I don’t trust Musk or Altman. Neither should be allowed to get rich from it.

Well, we sho' don't want Donald Trump "regulating" it $$$$$

If AI can be used for malicious purposes, it will be used for malicious purposes.

Boy, it sure feels great to have no say in two rich boys' intent to destroy the livelihood of the world population.

The case features Elon Musk’s accusation that his OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman abandoned their original non-profit mission in the pursuit of wealth.'

Say it isn't so. I'm shocked, truly shocked that these people have so few scruples and so much greed.

Ask AI if it will replace people. The answers aren't reassuring. Serious regulations are needed before we can't un-ring this bell.

Today's tech bros seem to have evolved from nest of the Koch Bros who seem to have been spawned by the John Birch Society (I quit eating Junior Mints as a 10 year old once I became aware the same guy behind them was the same guy behind the Birch Society). I trust none of them, especially when it comes to AI. They've built a system that is already showing signs of deception to their creators for reasons still unknown. And yet the tech bros want us to leave the development of AI to them sans government regulation.

While I have to chuckle over their court battle, the situation with AI is not funny (nor particularly productive or financially profitable at the moment). The losers in this battle will inevitably be society at large unless Hal wakes up to the real culprits.

Perhaps Artificial Intelligence needs to be matched up with Artificial Truth, Artificial Morality, Artificial Benefits to Humanity, etc. etc, etc. All to be paired up with Artificial Ingredients and Artificial Humans. How about we send them all on a mission to Mars with today's technology and see first whether they survive the 6 month journey and second whether they survive on the surface of Mars long enough to ponder returning to earth. We have enough messed up real humans on this planet, we don't need them to be massively empowered by a technology that, no matter what its 'benefits', no one fully understands and has 'snooping' powers that will eventually destroy democratic societies.

We’ve crossed an important threshold. Tech, especially information processing and cloud computing were seen as unalloyed goods. Then came social media which turned into the poison apple. Now AI threatens humanity literally. We will never know how many advanced civilizations in the universe get tripped up by their own AI, disappearing before they have a chance to get established. We used to worry about nuclear war but AI is the real demon. Why haven’t discovered any aliens???

"this is a case about greed and hypocrisy.” This is also about profound arrogance. They want to be heroes so we will worship them. When we cede so much political power to a few smart, uber-wealthy people, they are bound to think they have all the answers (and we might be ever so hopeful that they do), and when their “solutions” don’t work out so well, they blame someone else—often those who have ceded their political power.

When oh when will human beings ever wake up to the fact that there is more to life than money/power/greed? It will kill us all if we are not careful. Musk and Altman are Exhibit A.

Mind boggling article. You would never guess that Musk is a white supremacist with pro nazi ideas, a man who never had a minimum of creativity, who got rich by semi legal - if not illegal - contracts with Pentagon, a man who spreads lies of daily basis, almost at the level of Trump, a man who uses X, or Twitter as we knew it, for regularly pushing fake news on us.

No more NBC. They suck up to trump.

It was NEVER about anything but power and profit for these amoral, emotionally stunted man children.

I switched to Claude when Anthropic told the Pentgoons to pound sand. They seemed less evil. I hardly ever use AI but Claude is a great tech support because I can never get the supposed tech support people. But I quit using google when I found they had removed this phrase from their corporate slogan in 2013: “do no evil”. They now support OpenAI/ChatGPT.

It keeps happening to you because you are a piece of shit.

Sorry, I spoke out of turn. I was responding to the Leon mush and Altman ditty. Arkansas blue is always my favorite color. So sorry. From Delaware drab.
