I'll count this year as my first formal mentorship in visual framing terminology, thanks to Azza Cohen. I have always been interested in imagery, its association with propaganda, and how the nuances influence us as viewers, often in an instant. As Azza recently wrote, many people will just scan headlines and not read a story, but the image attached to it will automatically be absorbed. That's enormous power, often used for evil, not good.
I learned so much about the discrete treatment of men and women as photographic subjects, particularly from the "stalwart" images produced of the coward and poser Pete Hegseth contrasted with the demeaning ones of Kamala Harris and other women far stronger than he. And I appreciate the happy shots at the end of this piece, especially of our new family members at the Contrarian. We're here for each other, from the commenter who told us this week that she is elderly and alone to all the folks who have shared their personal stories to help us make better sense of the world around us.
