Meloni might not acknowledge the feminists built the stairs she climbed, but a generation of girls is watching a strong woman at the prime minister’s podium.
“Somehow, genderwashing has created an army of women fighting for the chance to oppress one another.” Azza, I'm so glad you included that quote in your article.
It is the best statement I've ever read depicting exactly why no woman will ever become president of these United States.
If I had been an Italian citizen I wouldn’t have voted for her either. Her ties to Berlusconi in her youth is too close to comfort for me. She calls herself a conservative and denies being a fascist but her beliefs are very far to the right. Though, I agree the photos of her are not necessarily an accurate representation of her as a leader.
And I appreciate Azza's pointing that out over and over again. And commend her for not giving us equal and opposite examples by making us look at more photos of Trump.
Language matters as much as image, and this is why I--a woman whose father's first language was Spanish--cannot get it together with societies for whom gendered language is baked in. It pervades all facets of life, rubber-stamping patriarchy and abuse.
I recall a Spanish teacher telling us to expect men cat-calling on the streets if we visited Spain, issuing "piropos" at women--supposed praise for good looks and femininity but really just plain old sexual harassment to someone who grew up in the U.S. during the women's movement. If I didn't want to wind up in a fistfight, I wasn't going to put myself in a situation in which that was seen as normal. I saw enough unsanctioned bullshit from guys on the subway.
Sorry for the misspell, Azza! I had just read the Usha article. My mind hath collapsed in on itself. This was an interesting post of yours; always appreciated.
Full blown mussolini loving fascist who is smart enough to understand she needs the EU cash so she holds back on the rightwing rhetoric when on camera.
I'd love to hear more on the story of your grandparents (nonni) escaping Roma in the middle of the night to avoid capture by Mussolini's fascist regime.
Our whole world will burn down, while feminists worry about whether photo images give an accurate presentation of the women who are helping burn it down. Forgive me if I don't care.
That’s quite a pic, as mentioned in the article. I was reminded of that clip of Nic Cage going “How’d it get burned Howd It Get Burned HOWDITGETBURNED?!?” and the actress had that face going “I! DON’T! KNOW!”

Bahahaha. Women ARE dangerous! All you need is the look. God will get you for that :) Love the article. Keep writing, I’ll keep following.
