We were once a nation that faced problems, not kicked them down the road to never be addressed. I think the issue lies with Congress, which could do much to solve so many of them--Supreme Court corruption and imbalance, the integrity of the healthcare system, tax inequality, etc.
I read that elected representatives in other countries receive the same healthcare benefits as ordinary citizens, not free benefits for life. So many perks of the office encourage just hanging onto the job, not rocking the boat, and never trying anything risky or hard. This week, Republican Rep. Nancy Mace's NYT article "What's the Point of Congress?" and Sen. Adam Smith's talk with Jen Rubin on the Contrarian (https://contrarian.substack.com/p/venezuela-western-dominance-and-regime) revealed just that: that Congress now does next to nothing that is proactive or addressing actual needs in Americans' lives. But the members sure have nice jobs and no reason to leave. Yet, there are well-intentioned and excellent ones, such as my Rep. Maxine Dexter and Sens. Wyden and Merkley.
If we want to fix anything, we must start with Congress.
Should we ever elect a Democratic president again, or perhaps even a sane Republican one, serious consideration should be given to using the current MAGGOT court rulings and new precedents to upend the court (replacing all the partisan activists in black robes), reverse the courts most egregiously undemocratic rulings (Citizens United, Trump vs USA, Roe v. Wade, etc.) and revoke the citizenship of Don the Con, his family and cronies as 'traitors and enemies of the state'. Two can play the game the rethuglicans are playing now, but it could be done with greater finesse and justification to undo all they are doing.
Once completed. and taking a page from our first president, step down into the role of an Executive empowered to 'faithfully enforce' the laws passed by a more balanced Congress!
Yes, the mess they are making is a monumental crisis that will take some bold strides, not avoidance. The American people are just going to have to accept that we need a makeover--not fundamentally, but to address the patchwork mess that Traitor Trump and the Tea Party have layered onto our laws and norms over the years.
Start at the top: address the pardon power and executive's role; the high court's boundaries and need for ethics oversight; and Congress's perks and term boundaries, which must be adjusted to encourage service instead of endless habitation of their offices.
The problem which has enabled Trump, Republicans and the Supreme Court to install a lawless fascist autocracy that rejects the Constitution and the rule of law is the failure to enforce the law against insurrection. But the 10th Amendment allows enforcement to be done by blue states. Read my post.
Thank you for calling out the MAGA 6. Deep reforms of the high court are no longer optional. I have no idea if we can get there, but that's not the point. Living and working for what actually matters is. Calling any and all with a conscience, and a heart for goodwill.
This assault on our country has been decades in the making. The Federalist Society has been working to capture the Supreme Court since its inception and they succeeded. In Trump they found their perfect vehicle, an amoral, selfish, power-hungry man who doesn't care what the court and far-right does as long as it makes him rich and powerful. The six Republican-appointed justices don't even pretend to care at all about precedent, textualism or originalism, they are just spoon-feeding power to Trump and Republicans and giving a big fat middle finger to anyone not on the Project 2025 bandwagon through the shadow docket and rulings against racial minorities and Democrats.
Is this really the world that Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett want for their children? They seem to trust Trump with unlimited power. Would they leave their daughters alone with him?
“ whether the Supreme Court will finally recognize the unprecedented dangers to the rule of law posed by the Trump presidency and begin enforcing the Constitution.”
Exactly right! Or, should I say, “exactly correct”, as the 6 on the Supine Court are traitorously “exactly (on the ) right”. They do NOT fairly adjudge. Rather, they have an agenda….which does NOT support and further the Constitution. SHAME on them! They are abetting the destruction of our Democracy! They have abdicated their fiduciary duty to us ALL!
If there’s any glimmer of a conscience left in these seemingly-conscience-dead “6”, we can only hope that that conscience comes alive again!
The selection process is open to corruption, as we have seen, and needs reform before another justice is chosen. I don't care if Clarence kacks out tomorrow.
Said quite well, Erwin. Add to all of that that our Dept. of Justice (especially our highest court) has turned its back on American democracy.
History will not shine favorably on Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Their children will ask repeatedly "WHY"???!!! Their family will carry their stain.
Yes, Felon 47 is the first demagogue to get elected to the Oval Office. But there have been plenty of role model for him in governor's offices, and in the US senate. He has also studied what Hitler and Musullini did in Europe a century ago, and Putin, Kim jun il, Erdogan, and the Hungarian guy have gotten away with. Not to mention recurring uprisings of the KKK. TIMOTHY EGAN IN 2023 DOCUMENTEDsuch a kkk researgence in Indiana in the 1920s.
I am thankful for solid resistance he has faced. Trump will not destroy our country, try as he has. Maybe it's time for a general strike.
You ask "whether the Supreme Court will finally recognize the unprecedented dangers to the rule of law posed by the Trump presidency?" but that's the wrong question. I think we all know and agree that all 9 Justices KNOW the dangers Trump poses to the rule of law and our Constitutional order. It's just that 6 of them would like to see it overturned in favor of their preferred form of Sharia Law.
The obscene misuse of the shadow docket to allow Justice Roberts to basically declare things "ex cathedra" without allowing anyone to present public arguments or a public vote is very telling here. He does not want to be a "judge", he simply wants to "declare the winners" as long as he is the one picking those winners.
I believe this is the end of our democracy. A Democrat will not be allowed to inhabit the White House. Trump is a malignant narcissist and controls the power agencies (DOJ, FBI) and the military. And the Project 2025 folk will not allow their destruction to be reversed.

Agree, but there is a solution if blue states act.

Six members of the SCOTUS want the same thing as the authors of Project 2025 do. We the People lost our country long before now. Sad and scary times.

“Or will it just be a rubber stamp approving every action by Trump?”
Yes.
