"When an absentee Ricky Gervais won, Sykes accepted the award on his behalf and thanked God and the trans community for him — a dig at the vocal atheist known for transphobic material."
Once these guys descend into bigotry, I never, ever watch them again. There are plenty of hardworking comedians who can joke about differences without baiting audiences with their own bigotry.
I don’t understand this post by Meredith Blake. I’ve seen only two clips from the Golden Globes: Robert DeNiro saying “Fuck Trump!” at the podium and Mark Ruffalo being interviewed about his anti-ICE pin. Blake didn’t mention either of those moments.
Hi Melissa-thanks for reading. The Robert De Niro clip you're mentioning was actually in 2018 at the Tonys, not the 2026 Globes. (see here: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jun/11/robert-de-niro-wins-ovation-fuck-trump-speech-tony-awards) This kind of fervent anti-Trump commentary used to be much more commonplace at Hollywood events, which is part of the point I was trying to make about the industry's sudden silence. Also, I did mention the anti-ICE pins and red carpet statements made by a few stars including Ruffalo. But I was primarily responding to the main broadcast, which is much more scripted and controlled, and therefore a pretty good gauge of the industry's willingness to be vocally critical of Trump.
Perhaps the winning entries speak for themselves. Perhaps not everything should be a political venue. Perhaps sometimes we need entertainment to be only entertainment.
On the red carpet, actor Mark Ruffalo shared how many of us are feeling these days 💔

I'm glad I never watch these self-congratulatory "award" shows, where the truly best rarely win.

Thanks for the info! I guess I get too much “news” from short videos these days. I’ll be more careful of ferreting out the context.
What a wonderful article. Thank you.
Didn’t watch but like the line see BS about CBS!
