Anyone who is not subscribing to two-time Pulitzer winner Ann Telnaes is making a huge mistake and has no idea what they are missing. Her truly hilarious cartoon of the Bezos couple on Monday had me in absolute stitches. I am including the link here, but don't know if it can be viewed without a subscription:

Many Muslims fault us for being culturally decadent. I think they are onto something. Seeing news clips of this and previous galas, one must agree. All the money spent on those...not sure the term 'costumes' really captures what they are. Do the Bezos-Sanches couple and Anna Wintour realize just how vapid it all is? Do they care? How long are we going to celebrate this excess? Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut had nothing on the cultural rot on view at the Met Galas.

Top notch, Meredith.

Thanks. I knew I could count on you for perspective and intelligent commentary on the Met’s dress-up event. And now I know—from the YouTube clip—who the person was in the peacock-like gown with the odd hair (is that real, I wondered.) It was Wintour.

Not being up on all the ends and outs of fashion and magazines I still clearly wondered what in the world Mrs Bezos was doing as chair of the event. At the same time I also wondered why more than 75% of the participants were more interested in looking pretty than in exploring the theme. In the past I have loved the gala being a lover of creativity but this year except for a handful I was disappointed.

This line is really snide: "The man who made a fortune selling toilet paper with free two-day shipping sponsoring the biggest event in fashion? Perish the thought." Many people have gone from rags to riches, from gutter to penthouse. Attacking people in this way is poor journalism.
