The AI buzz has grown to a deafening roar. It is nearly impossible to ignore the daily hysterics about how this technology — which is evidently beyond our control and grasp — will completely redefine our livelihoods. Some days, it feels too big to wrap our minds around it, leaving many of us feeling helpless and frightened.
But we cannot let fear-mongering distractions get the best of us. Not now. The fight to develop this technology safely is existential. It is as important as our fight for democracy, and inextricably linked to our survival as a free society.
That is why we are advocating fiercely for AI guardrails. And it’s why we’re paying attention to leading voices taking practical steps to make a difference. This week, both Ambassador Susan Rice and Governor JB Pritzker have been on our platform — not to trigger alarm bells, but to offer sound solutions.
Susan Rice: I’m not prepared to accept either Trump or the tech leaders’ word for anything on something that is so vital to the future of our planet, of our children, of this country. And so we need very serious regulation. We are unleashing threats of a magnitude that could kill millions and millions of people in this country and around the world.
Gov. JB Pritzker: Those responsible for developing the technology admit they still don’t fully understand the speed or depth of the calamities we might be facing…At the dawn of another technological revolution, we face a choice. We can work together to establish thoughtful guardrails in ways that benefit both industry and humanity. Or we can allow a handful of actors to evade accountability and push the costs and danger onto ordinary people.
We need human intelligence to regulate artificial intelligence, and The Contrarian is bringing those voices to the forefront. They are among many leaders we have sought out to help us navigate a plausible path forward, together.
