"When discretion sits in the White House, predictability sits on the edge of a pen. "
"Discretion" is a generous term; "whim" would be more apt regarding Mister Narcissist. And we can extrapolate O'Neill's insights to U.S. law firms, universities, media co.s, and anyone else targeted on a butthurt whim.
Veruca Salt forcibly learned her lesson. Time to teach Mister his.
Thank you Professor O'Neill. A very disquieting post. Alerts us that behind the fun in watching clips of Japan's PM rescuing the US President, there are serious consequences from these appeasement policies from US allies.
As you write, "Russia and China don't need to out-maneuver the US militarily when Washington's partners perform restraint instead of resistance."
It's not fair to criticize foreign countries who are forced to deal with Trump because American voters foolishly returned him to office. Just as with an unruly child at school, discipline begins at home. The GOP, the Supreme Court and tech oligarchs indulged Trump and have unleashed him to shakedown Americans and the rest of the world. America needs to fix the problem it created.
Dr O’Neill, such a disgusting display by this Felon and even worse that these Asian nations are giving in. When we can get rid of this Regime it will be many years of rebuilding our reputation. Thank you for your excellent post.
From Starmer to Takaichi the knee-bending, the fawning, the fealty are sickening. Did no one notice that obeisance gets one nowhere. There is no respect, no privilege, no loyalty given by this president in return for the dignity his peers surrender to him. To this president, compliance is weakness. He will exploit this and ridicule it.

Any US allies out there not bending the knee?
Oh, Canada.
Thank you Canada.

Roughly 49% of those bothering to vote are also responsible for creating, or at least enabling the problem.
He's Veruca Salt, Mike TeeVee, Augustus Gloop and Violet Beauregard all rolled into one, diaper-soiling little brat.
This is a great comment!

I follow a very simple rule that somehow never made its way to what are supposed to be top intelligent politicians and diplomats.
Never ever give in to the demands or expectation of a bully.
For you'll not only lose your lunchmoney but also the cookies for your 10 'o' clock break..... every day.
"The point is simple: Indulgence dressed up as strategy invites only more demands."
Appeasement has the same effect. Seen as weakness, it encourages more and greater demands.
Oh, that photo!!
