In every case they were caring, good people. There is more that binds us than separates us. Studies have shown that there is more variation with groups than there is between groups.
Americans near the Canadian border have reported having their tires slashed. This despite the fact that most Americans are appalled at what has happened. Americans are the recipients of this counterproductive behavior.
I live in NYC and was here on September 11, 2001. And I well recall that how so many of us, here where the devastation was horrific - stood appalled to see "our tragedy" used for motives that HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH attack. The Congressperson representing the district where the Twin Towers stood voted against allowing "W" Bush et. al to use force in Iraq. The civil libertarians were sounding alarms about the ENTIRE concept of a "department of 'Homeland Security." They called it out for what it could all too easily become: a vehicle for federal government intrusion into the lives of ordinary, law-abiding citizens. You write that Americans have learned - NO THEY DIDN'T! Learning NOW is nearly too late and it's only happening because they can't ignore how the DHS is being used as a personal army for the president. Thankfully it is not too late - but I worry that the "terrorism" word will always be pulled out whenever Americans demand that the DHS be dismantled. And those who make these demands will be labeled "terrorist enablers." Let us all strive to ignore those who only have labels to defend their undemocratic actions.
It's not true. This country didn't change forever from those two towers in NYC coming down. It changed forever when people from Europe and England began invading.
