Dems need to be wary of electing faux Democrats like Fetterman, Sinema, and Manchin. I would think purple states are the places they are most likely to emerge.

Laurie's avatar

That is not what Talarico is. But purple states need purple candidates. That's just reality.

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Psy ops works. Better ANY Dem than ANY Republican.

Ivan Tufaart's avatar

I agree. I start from the premise that the worst Democrat is preferable to the best Republican, given the current state of the GQP. And if that's true, then I pick the Democrat who has the best chance to win in November. And the successful candidate in TX, WV, and PA will probably be different than the successful one in CA, NY, WA, etc. That's just life.

When I read about Fetterman, I hope that he gets primaried out when he's up for reelection (and assuming he chooses to run again, which he may not), But the strategist in me says that Fetterman may be the most electable candidate in PA.

Let's not forget the "White Men Can't Jump" premise-- better to win ugly than to lose pretty

donna woodward's avatar

What good is it to elect Fetterman as a D when he so often votes R on important issues? Remember, he ran as a fairly progressive candidate but still got elected after all the hooplah Dr. Oz was given by Mr. T. I truly think those strokes did a job on Fetterman's brain.

Anca Vlasopolos's avatar

I agree about the strokes; they changed him. I don't think he's a good enough actor to fake his political stance. I donated to Fetterman, and I've written him numerous times to tell him how I regret those donations. Still, better Fetterman than Oz.

A person with stronger democratic leaning would be better still.

DONNA, thank you! I think it is the person who matters, matters for integrity, wisdom, lack of prejudice in any form, lack of greed, but FULL OF HUMANITY, full about caring for the Earth and life, ALWAYS BEING RESPECTFUL AND WISE, REGARDLESS OF PARTY.

Here is what I am sharing today about an upcoming congressional seat when a Republican will leave. I think we not only need wonderful Democrats on our side, we also need trustworthy people who think like wise democrats to sit on the Republican side. Then, if we lose, we will still have somebody we can trust to do what is right and not to be bought.

POSSIBLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP?

NEVADA WILL HAVE AN OPEN

CONGRESSIONAL SEAT!

Now that another Republican is leaving Congress, as I have read in a message made available by Native Voters Alliance Nevada, or NVA or NVAV, there is an opportunity to help them do what they can to avoid having a replacement of the same mindset as the person who is leaving Congress and of the person currently proud of his undeclared, unofficial war while still being against minorities within our national population.

I understand that NATIVE VOTERS ALLIANCE NEVADA is online in various places.

What we do to help one state when any congressional seat opens, is help for our legislature over all because the types of votes they make affect much of our country. Watching who will run for election in Nevada is important even though many of us do not live there and do not know anybody there, so I suggest paying attention.

Native American Voters Alliance Nevada does take non-tax deductible donations; however, I am only sharing this information only to let readers know that there is going to be an additional seat opening which will be on their state ballot. Any decision for support through a donation is an individual one, of course. There are ways to help even without making a donation.

How can a person help yet not donate?

It seems that by being aware, by reading of their needs and sharing news of a candidate they believe will support them and their rights, especially their voting and land rights, without a prejudiced attitude, and with no intention of intruding on their land to denude it of minerals or whatever wealth they perceive is there and covet away from Native Americans, we can share the name of the good candidate. If it is posted in places where people who vote there will see it, Nebraskan voters will be more aware, and in doing so,we could help both Native American Voters and anyone anywhere whose welfare would be involved in legislation.

Native Voters Alliance Nevada should be easy to find in a search for anyone who cares to read and to know more. I do not feel it would be right to copy and paste their letter here. Although it has an excellent description, the letter does ask for donations To Help Them Avoid More of the Current Republican Mindset in Congress. We should be aware of congressional seats opening everywhere!

Win the majority party position in either the House or the Senate, from which all power flows.

Nancy Karam's avatar

And let's not forget there are a ton of us NPAs out here, waiting patiently to ring the bell on the Democratic side. Fetterman should get his ugly, classless ass kicked out of politics completely. And, I am soooo glad Talarico won the primary and I pray he wins in November, hands down!!!

Jane in NC's avatar

John Fetterman couldn't win a Democratic primary in PA, and he will certainly be primaried. He can't run as a republican because, while republicans might like watching him on Fox trash other Democrats, they won't vote for him over one of their own. An independent candidacy would likely draw more republican votes than democratic votes. All that said, I STRONGLY suspect his next move, probably already in the works, is to become a talking head on Fox or NewsMax.

Ivan Tufaart's avatar

I think you're right. If he decides to run again (and I'm not convinced he will), he'll get a serious primary challenge. I just hope it's not from someone that's just too far left for the electorate, which would send the seat to the GQP. And if he changed parties, he'd lose there too. Let's face it, PA is a swing state and I don't think an Elizabeth Warren-type candidate will do well.

I hear that Conor Lamb is considering a run. He's a centrist but that might be what's needed to win there.

Jane in NC's avatar

Connor Lamb would be the best choice to replace Fetterman. Not everyone might agree with his position on issues, but he's a good fit for PA. And he'll never be a sell-out like Fetterman. We NEED to flip the senate as well as the House. Now is the time to link arms across the Dem/Indy spectrum and work hard to make that happen.

Susan Iwanisziw's avatar

I heard Fetterman is throwing his hat into the next presidential race. The man recently died (heart stopped) on duty and was resuscitated. A walking, Netanyahu-adoring time-bomb.

donna woodward's avatar

I feel sorry for him, and his family, but would never vote for him again. I hate to criticize him on the basis of a disability but I do think those stokes did a job on his cognition. He might have made a difference. Now all he's known for is wearing hoodies and shorts year 'round.

Yes, I wrote voting letters on his behalf. It hurts most when you realize you’ve been cheated of your expectations.

Dems need to be wary of selecting candidates who believe in multiple genders, God is non-binary and had to get consent from Mary to bear Jesus, and "neighbors with a uterus". It may play well with the Left, but a general election may prove more difficult.

Talarico may have been sent by the universe to help us.....you must agree he is not a regular person.

BosPhotoGuy's avatar

The first Senate campaign I ever volunteered for was Beto O'Rourke in Texas. It was an extremely well run campaign utilizing a lot of high tech for the time. I sent many thousands of get out the vote texts and countless phone banks. To this very day I still have a pang thinking about Beto's loss. I learned a lot about how campaigns work, and I also, sadly, learned a lot about how the elections process in Texas works. Compared to the election interference we can expect in the midterms those practices seem almost benign today.

Given my past experience it's a tough choice to support Talarico despite the fact that I think he's a very appealing candidate. Ultimately, I will indeed support him because I think it's imperative to flip the Senate and we must try to win EVERY Senate race,- long shot or not. Texas voters are going to face many Republican imposed obstacles to voting. It will take an army of volunteers to try to overcome this anti-democratic effort. I hope others will join me.

Thank you, BosPhotoGuy. Beto is the best. He is criss-crossing Texas, volunteering with the grassroots nonprofit, Powered by People, “to help Texas voters change the country” by supporting and electing Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Please subscribe to Beto’s Substack if you haven’t already. Here is his latest post:

The 51st vote

James Talarico and Texas can save America

👉🏼 Texas Democrats now have a nominee for every Congressional seat, every State House seat and every State Senate seat for the first time since 1974. That means that behind James are nearly 200 strong, local candidates who are pulling in new voters from across the 254 counties of Texas.

I'm not holding my breath because I've hoped for this for decades, but I think Talarico is a generational politician, with all the tools it takes for success. (Of course, I thought the same thing about Beto, but Talarico seems, shall we say, a bit more grounded than Beto). And I'm going to forecast this based on what I've heard some pundits say. I think the gerrymandering tactic in Texas could blow up in the GOP's faces. In order to jank up the map as they did, they took some solid red districts and made them pink, which puts them in the 12-14% points margin that Democrats have been making up in elections all over the country. The arrogant GOP thought once Latinos swung their way in '24, they had them for life. This is how stupid the GOP is. Did they think once Trump unleashed ICE on people with brown and black skin that they would vote GOP EVER AGAIN? It's laughable how stupid Trump and his goons are.

patricia's avatar

america has lots of stupid voters also....like Latinos who voted for trump

If you look at Talarico's and Crockett's politics, they're really not very different. It's their tone that sets them apart. Talarico is conciliatory while Crockett is a firebrand (and a very entertaining one at that). I suspect that in a state-wide race in Texas, picking the conciliatory approach was the right move- especially since their politics are pretty similar.

That said, as Texas has become more urbanized and suburbanized, people have been predicting its transition from deep red to purple ever since the 1990s. It ain't happened yet and in spite of the talking heads, I'll believe it when I see it!

Yeah, but those were "Southern Democrats", and after signing lots of civil rights bills, LBJ is believed to have said "I've handed the South to the Republican Party for the next generation". He was correct, except we're working on 3 generations now and the South is still becoming more Repugnican't

I could have easily supported either James Talarico or Jasmine Crockett. Either would make a great addition to the United States Senate. Living next door to Texas in Arkansas, I ask those of you who are reading Jennifer Rubin to PLEASE check out Hallie Shoffner, the Democrat candidate for Senate in Arkansas. Ms. Shoffner is a sixth generation Arkansas farmer, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, and more importantly she is the opposite of Tom Cotton. I honestly believe she can defeat Tom Cotton. Check out Hallie Shoffner here: https://www.hallieshoffner.com/

Good news from Texas. However, we should recognize that the system isn't "broken". It has been deliberately destroyed by the Heritage Foundation & the MAGA Fascists they have bred. It's functioning as they intended. Let's stop rehashing the endless examples of the Evil that oozes out of the WH Monster and the MAGA Malignancy. It's whack-a-mole. Hearings are a waste of time. Impeachment & Conviction is the only useful action. The MAGA Party must be destroyed in November. Maybe there's hope, but hope is not a plan.

One man -- Elon Musk -- may be the key.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/27/technology/elon-musk-companies-texas.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Q1A.aA6a.q9WDy_f_uVRI&smid=url-share

"...Mr. Musk, 54, has quietly built an empire of more than 90 companies and other legal entities in Texas, which have amassed a vast collection of assets, according to an examination by The New York Times.

"... The Times identified at least 37 companies that appeared to be largely for Mr. Musk’s personal use. Among them was one that owns two multimillion-dollar condominiums totaling more than 7,000 square feet in the Austin Proper Hotel, with sweeping views of downtown. Other companies managed planes that Mr. Musk uses for private travel and a portfolio of more than 1,000 acres of land, which when combined is bigger than Central Park in New York. The lines between Mr. Musk’s business and personal interests are often blurry, and some of the companies most likely served both purposes.

"The Times’s examination also offers a window into how Mr. Musk used private companies to support Donald J. Trump during the 2024 election. Tapping these companies to cover the expenses of a super PAC is highly unusual, campaign finance experts said, and ended up obscuring how money was being spent because they are not subject to the disclosure requirements of super PACs."

Bob Egbert's avatar

If the Muskrat and the other Billionaires Without a Conscience (BWCs) want the WH cleared of it's current infection it will probably happen. However, I don't expect they would replace it with a regime that would be better for the majority of Americans.

John Lucken's avatar

I hope there comes a time when no matter how much they spend, they still can’t win because they and their ideas are so toxic. We saw it when Musk involved himself in the Judicial contest not too long ago. He spent big and still lost.

Ultimately we need campaign finance reform and the overturn of Citizens United. Resurrect the Voting Rights Act Democrats almost passed for a start.

LiverpoolFCfan's avatar

"to ensure we have elected leaders who are serving the people and not billionaire mega donors"

This IS the fight of the future.

We must get Citizens United overturned or legislated out of existence.

Campaign spending by super PACs went from $62 million in 2010 (the year CU was handed down by the Roberts Court) to $4.1 BILLION in 2024.

We also need to institute PUBLICLY FINANCED elections.

Public servants must serve their constituents, not their biggest campaign donors.

Steve 218's avatar

An absolute yes to campaign finance reform. Also shorten the campaign season cycle to six months from announce to the final vote. In this age of instant communication, there is no reason why the campaign to election time should drag on as long as it does.

As someone who was born and raised in Texas, who had Ann Richard’s as a neighbor, but hasn’t lived in Tx in many many years, I can’t tell you how excited I am about this! I love Talarico and thought his interview with Colbert was great! Let’s go Texas! Turn blue or least purple!

It's Come To This's avatar

And buried in the shuffle is the fact that Democrats together OUTVOTED Republicans in Texas by 150,000 votes, even with the shenanigans in Dallas (in a primary, no less). I can't think when that's happened last. In North Carolina, it was 200,000. And now Montana is an open contest....

Beware of party registration estimates in Texas. It is an open primary and crossover strategies are in play to sway the primary outcomes to the weaker candidate for the opposing party. That said, turnout matters and Democrats in Texas have an abysmal voter turnout rate compared to Republicans. This time it may be different, but election dirty tricks are the rule in Texas.

Paxton got involved and played games with Dallas county to the direct effect of increasing her loss. Crossover might not have been a big factor.
