When a warmonger, convicted fraudster, & sexual predator doesn't get what he demands, just threaten the end of civilization, more pillaging & plunder with apparent impunity?

The in your face corruption & criminality is a badge of honor?

Anne Pierce's avatar

That is how Trump rolls, which is a disaster for everyone else.

"In addition, down ballot Republicans in Texas will rightfully worry that Paxton will depress turnout and/or make it impossible for them to distance themselves from the most wackadoodle elements in the party."

Just a little bit of encouraging math here.

2,073, 750 Texas voters turned out for the Dem primary

1,387,674 Texas voters turned out for the Republican primary

In a solid Republican state, that's an enthusiasm gap worth noticing.

Judy's avatar

Agree! And I think he’s emboldened by his primary victories which will lead to even more disaster (if that’s possible).

We’re talking TX, which barely cares about Paxton’s issues. And they’ll go after Talarico without shame or regard for the truth. It’s already happening. Talarico needs to go on the attack now before he gets defined, a lesson that Dems routinely fail to learn.

Chris Dortch's avatar

He's already begun. The oaf Paxton has started calling him Talfrico. As in freak. So Talrico's crew made t-shirts and has already begun to sell them. They tried calling him a vegan. He isn't, but that's the best they've got? That he doesn't eat meat or dairy? They're going to have a hard time with this guy, because he's a choirboy who has no dirt in his past and got into politics to make lives better for his fellow humans. Paxton is the polar opposite. A despicable, lying, grifting, cheater. In other words, Trump's kind of guy.

Paxton's initial attempts at coming up with insulting names for Talarico are really pretty pathetic. It may turn out that Paxton really doesn't know how to face a well-funded candidate in a general election, since his Democratic opponents when he was running for AG never had much money.

Craig Sharon's avatar

i would add that talarico can’t rely on national dems to help out, except perhaps with money, but any such amount will be dwarfed by what the Rs will spend.

Stephen Brady's avatar

Except, that these massive spends by rethug donors seem to be experiencing diminishing returns. If the dems can just engage their own and moderate-to-left leaning independents, they vastly outnumber the MAGAts.

patricia's avatar

spend this spend that, it won't make any difference...you still have idiot voters

Craig Sharon's avatar

agreed. that’s one of my points. talarico has been slow to respond (other than the one quip about eating bbq since before paxton’s 1st indictment). if he waits too long, he’ll be on the defensive until november.

Susan Iwanisziw's avatar

Paxton was on the hook until those attempting to prosecute him abruptly turned tail. I can’t recall why.

Al Draycott's avatar

A wonderful fit for a Criminal Crime Syndicate , Paxton is perfect , he has all the qualifications for the job. Sex, fraud, corruption, . James Talarico may just wipe the floor up with him.

Kathleen M. Eisenhauer's avatar

You would think…but Tx is a wealthy, red state. Buying elections seems to be in vogue these days for the Rs and their Maggot cult followers. Tx isn’t MI.

Texas is not a monolith. Austin, Houston are very blue and both are large population centers. The Rio Grande Valley is heavily Hispanic and while those folks flirted with Trump in 2024, they’ve dropped him like a bad habit. While it’s a huge state and a very expensive place to campaign, it’s not wall-to-wall MAGA.

Margaret Reis's avatar

Trump and Paxton have a lot in common!

Steve 218's avatar

Indeed yes. Both Trump and Paxton are criminals.

Chris Dortch's avatar

Further proof of what a complete simpleton Trump is. He doeesn't understand how government works, and doesn't care to learn, other than how to skirt the rules so he can line his pockets. He proclaimed yesterday that he "didn't care about the midterms," but those words will come back to haunt him, especially now that he's started Texas' inevitable churn toward becoming a purple state.

Steve 218's avatar

Also recently, he said in regard to Americans in the economy, that he didn't care about them either. If it wasn't before, it's clear now that he only cares about himself.

Democrats should be very careful about anointing Paxton as their “dream candidate”. Talarico is by no means a “shoe-in”….and we cannot underestimate the ability of Texans to proudly and energetically vote for the worst possible candidate. Texas Democrats have a big job to do if they want to upset Trump’s anointed one. Stop gloating and start working. If Beto/Cruz taught us anything, it is that a lackluster Republican candidate who does little for his constituents is easily elected over a hard-working and fairly charismatic Democrat.

RenaldoMooon's avatar

As Paxton tried to nullify Michigan votes in the 2020 Presidential election, will Michiganders be allowed to vote against him in the upcoming Texas Senate race?

Asking for 10.16 million friends.

Carole Langston's avatar

Talarico better realize that turn the other cheek or take the high ground, doesn't work with filth throwers. Paxton has already shown his playground spew.

Go for the facts, ie. Look what they've done.

Richard Brody's avatar

It will depend on voters who actually care about the character of their elected officials. Paxton’s record has so many instances of pomposity and self aggrandizement that he is a perfect fit with T…p. Or maybe he want’s T…p’s job. Maybe Paxton sees an opening for his own brand of bad governance.

Carole Langston's avatar

Yes, but primaries, as I have read, are low turn out and it seems this was too. The die hard NUTZ turn out. We DO out number them. AND, the Latino vote is big. Talarico has to be inclusive and welcome all the injured and disillusioned. Hit them with, look at the damage they've done/are doing. Paxton uses schoolyard insults.

Punkette's avatar

Thank you, Jen. Yes, Cornyn got clobbered by Paxton, but there is more to the story. Reported by Robert Hubbell on his Substack this morning:

“The turnout in Texas was pathetic, making it dangerous and foolhardy to draw conclusions about the relative strength of Trump, Republicans, and Democrats among Texas voters. Only 8% of Texas registered voters participated in the run-off election.

In some counties, Paxton and Cornyn received votes in the single or double digits. For example, in Zapata County, Paxton garnered 22 votes, while Cornyn won 6 votes, making it appear that Paxton crushed Cornyn 79% to 21%.

For example, the latest available data from the Texas Secretary of State shows there are 7,886 registered voters in Zapata County, meaning the turnout in the Republican runoff—28 voters—was very close to 0%.

Moreover, because Zapata County is predominantly Latino (93%), someone not paying attention to the low turnout could erroneously conclude that Paxton has very strong support in counties with large Latino populations.”

JL West's avatar

Thanks for the added context, as that is something I was wondering about.

Punkette's avatar

You’re welcome, JL. Me too. An abysmal 8 percent voter turnout in the run-off election bodes well for Talarico, I would think. He was already polling 6 points ahead of Paxton before the run-off. I think “the kid” has a great chance to win in November. Will make another modest donation to his campaign.

If HL Mencken was correct when he asserted "As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." and now we have Trump can it not also be said that the same was true when Texans elected Abbott and could be true once again with Paxton? Texans consider themselves a special breed and their leadership has consistently represented their inner soul and their inner soul has never been clearer than it is now with the Paxton leading the Republican ticket. Being a Republican aka Southern Democrat of yore is who and what most Texans are and in the words of Hubert Humphrey, they are "pleased as punch" to keep it that way regardless of the negative impacts imposed by their leadership choices.

Richard Brody's avatar

I see heartlessness and soulless. I understand state pride, but what of the lack of humanity?

Ann's avatar

I’d be shocked if Paxton loses but my hope does spring eternal.

Mary's avatar

I wonder what the Bush family thinks of Paxton. I know what Barbara would think. She's rolling over in her grave right now.

Bonnie Boyce's avatar

Paxton is the revenge of the ignoramuses.

David Krupp's avatar

The Republicans of Texas have made it possible for Talarico to become the first Democratic Senator from Texas in many years. Good for them!

Michelle Jordan's avatar

Paxton may prove to be Trump’s worst nightmare. He’s the trouble maker from hell. No one will forget his antiabortion extremism in the Kate Cox case among other heinous acts he’s guilty of that Jen has enumerated here. Smart Texans will vote for Talarico as will most Latinos, women, blacks and other people of color will support their Democratic candidate.

Bonnie Boyce's avatar

Well, yes, “smart Texans” will certainly vote for Talarico, butttt…..

Michelle Jordan's avatar

True, shouldn’t be any but about it it’s either fresh blood or roadkill.

Steve 218's avatar

He (paxton) has gotten away with mayhem so far. He's similar to Trump in that respect.

patricia's avatar

smart texans ? quiet people from NJ, football haters from alabama, slow walkers from NY, crab haters from Maryland, etc.

Roberto Blanco's avatar

I’ve read most of the comments here which to this point center on how morally repugnant Paxton is an TX money.

I’ve been listening and watching Talarico speak for a year now. He is a Texan, and his family has been for many years. A great communicator, he speaks to the issues, and he is as Christian as you can get. If he gets the funding to get his message in front of everyone I think he has a legitimate chance to beat Paxton.
