"thanks to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, if they’re Hispanic, Muslim, members of the African diaspora, or even vaguely non-European looking, getting back home in one piece could be a crapshoot."
White people are also targets of the ICE crapshoot.
Canadians crossing into the US face the threat of arrest every time they try. Over 50 Canadian citizens have been detrained, including a mother and her autistic daughter, and a Canadian national, Johnny Noviello, who died in custody when he was denied appropriate medical care.
Soccer fans need to know they are facing real risks if they decide to travel to the US to see the matches.
I wish we could respond with not-a-heart. Minneapolis taught us that everyone is at risk, and a frickin month goes by, and bam--never happened. Thank you for mentioning individuals who were harmed. We should never forget, particularly when our closest neighbor is treated like shit.
My thoughts, too, Shalise, as I am working on a book for someone currently on security staff for the U.S. events. I asked them if they were worried about ICE presence, and they said no--that Infantino and America's president-king had everything under control. This told me ... that they absolutely do not. Next up: wreck the World Series and Superbowl because Trump got booed once.
Spot on, Shalise. I would really laugh my butt off, if all of the stadiums in the US were only half full. That would at least take some money out of Infantino's pocket, as well as those of his equally corrupt FIFA "leaders."
So many people are appalled, disgusted, horrified, repulsed, sickened, and/or rationally fearful of the Trump government and are acting accordingly—to protect themselves, to act on their principles, to say “no” to the fascists. (What other descriptions describe responses? How about “incredulous” for the oil traders only now realizing Trump’s words are meaningless.) Your journalism reflects this, but so much that I read still does not. Keep writing like this. The horror, disgust and heightened caution matter. How people feel about Trump and his goons, like Hegseth, matters a lot. They pretend it doesn’t. But people staying away is a sign of how little power they have. Their force is performative. It is not power. They are weak. The Kennedy Center. The World Cup. Similar. So many people want nothing to do with anything Trump puts his hands on. And rightly so.
Why would anybody dare come here under the circumstances? Although a dear friend just let me know she was cancelling her June visit, it came as no surprise to me. I'm not even going to set foot in an airport. Four hour security lines? Deadly runway intrusions? Over 3,000 unfilled air traffic controller vacancies? And ICE is going to take care of it? The real horror is what's happening in Iran. Nobody, least of all Trump, knows where that's headed. The hook for him and his minions can't come quick enough.
Is this the round ball? Who F*ing cares? Take this elsewhere. America does not deserve this. F* the supreme criminals. Anybody stupid enough to do something here deserves it. Anybody who lives off of kicking something with their foot deserves what they get.
