"While the President remains fixated on naval blockades in the Strait of Hormuz"

... he is deflecting by spending even more of our money on painting the Reflecting Pool, overhauling a public golf course, painting an enormous office building to the tune of $7 million, ruining the Kennedy Center, building an arch that no on needs, still adding onto his failed border wall, paying for Kash Patel to get drunk and gamble in Las Vegas every weekend, using our money to cancel energy contracts that we had already funded and wasting the construction to date, firing and rehiring perfectly fine public servants, and promising to give back a whopping 18 cents worth of gas tax on the gallon that we will then repay through tariffs on something or other.

There, fixed it for ya, Jeff! And that's BEFORE we have to suffer more human casualties. But, real estate comes first.

Don't forget the added distraction of the Bejing meeting with Xi, from which little, if anything will come for us. Trump will fly to China and back while domestic flights are being cancelled due to the high cost of aviation fuel.

Good point. And note that no one has mentioned Epstein in a week.

Too much smoke and not enough mirrors.

So how is the Reflecting Pool to be kept clean with all of the National Park Service budget and personnel cuts? The sun exposure will grow algae like who wouldn't have it.

Heh heh. Now that the cost has ballooned, the real estate genius who said he picked the contractor because he knew him, says he doesn't know him at all. Surely that last thing must be true, because no one's coming back to work for Trump after getting stiffed.

TACO Trump strikes again.

Does this mean that the foolish idea has been scrapped? Hope so.

At the last protest I went to, a fellow patriot handed me a red, white, and blue sticker that read, LET'S GO TACO. I wonder if Joe Biden had those printed up.

The pool job is underway and halfway trashed already.

And now he is asking for one billion from taxpayers, not rich doners,

for the ballroom that nobody wants.

I used to say that presidents have very little influence on gas prices. Trump proved me wrong.

This fact-based opinion piece is excellent, and makes its point by throwing Trump's campaign promises back at him -- so we can see clearly, in hindsight, the insidious nature of his falsehoods on the campaign trail, while taking another look at all the accusations he made about Biden and the Democrats. The tremendous irony, of course, here, is that too many voters actually believed him. This is the kind of opinion piece that 60 Minutes routinely used to air. Not any more. Something is very wrong in a democracy when a billionaire can own a national news station, like Fox News, and twist and contort coverage to align with and further his own interests and political tastes. I do not know enough, but am thinking that we may need to reconsider whether national news media should all be publicly owned, and operated by nonpartisan professionals who care about truthfully, factually informing the public about what is happening. The integrity of the press, radio, and television in covering the events of the day has never been so important. It clearly has failed us, perhaps enabling this presidency. In a democracy, citizens cannot make good judgements and assessments at the ballot box without knowing the facts.

I would be interested to know who all voted not to override Reagan's veto of the "Fairness in Broadcasting Act of 1987." That alone enabled the start of Murdoch's war on the truth in reporting, not just in broadcast, but also in newspaper reporting.

As I've said many times, the sainted Ronnie Reagan did more to damage this country than all presidents but the current orange jesus.

Trump is totally better off than he was 4 years ago.

I wish gas was only $4.50. In Seattle it is over $6.00 in most places. We do have high gas taxes, but the price has never been this high before.

Steve 218's avatar

$5.00/gallon here in mid-Illinois. Premium, should anyone need it is a buck more.

"When asked recently about the skyrocketing costs, President Trump’s response was chillingly detached: it’s a “very small price to pay for getting rid of a nuclear weapon from people that are really mentally deranged.”"

Reality is that it's a high price to pay for Americans caused by the illegal war of a deranged president whre there is no imminent threat of a deliverable nuclear weapon, or anything else.

I know times are tough, but there should never, ever, be a suspension of either federal or state gas taxes. First, this feeds into the idea that gasoline taxes are a significant chunk of the cost. The federal gasoline tax is a measly 18.4 cents per gallon, state taxes range from 8.95 cents/gal in Alaska to 70.92 cents/gal in California. So even the highest state tax is dwarfed by the retail increases so far this year.

Second, gasoline taxes have been insufficient to cover highway maintenance for decades, and cutting gasoline taxes means fewer road projects and greater long-term deficits, but worse, it means more money out of general revenue subsidizing roads and another bonus for people who can afford it while doing nothing for people dependent on transit. And it diminishes the only incentive currently functioning in the United States to switch to cars with better fuel economy or EVs.

In Washington State the gas price for regular as of yesterday was $5.53 per gallon where we buy fuel in Kingston WA. Diesel was $6.59.

With gas being a dollar and a half a gallon more since the war started on February 28th it’s eating up everyone’s budget. So hard to make ends meet. What’s even worse is if people have to eat a specific diet because of health issues or must take medication then how do they pay for it?
