Carlson is "abandoning" the Republican party because it's losing. He wants to position himself as its next leader, a less boorish and dementia ridden Trump, ready to harness the grievance fueled rage of mediocre white men into a political career.
Coates is so right- Trump just exposed what the R party has been at least since Reagan. The party’s racism, sexism, elitism etc were made obvious by the most vulgar, unfit, ignorant candidate by far that the R party ever put forth. But, now, at last the party has the power it’s long lusted for (esp with this corrupt SC majority) and it will be very hard to right the ship after their gross incompetence & hateful policies, & corrupt conduct.

When it comes to racism, Republican politicians have become good at blowing "dog whistles". The bigots get the message, but the speaker retains "plausible deniability" (cf. Reagan and the "welfare queen, with 6 kids from 6 different fathers, who drives her Cadillac to the welfare office to pick up her check. Note that he never mentioned race).
But when it comes to Don "the Con" Trump, dog whistles won't cut it. He's out there blowing a foghorn you can hear 25 miles out to sea!
Tucker is all about continuing his brand of riling up some group(s) with rage and hate ... they can be different groups ... but it is selling rage and hate that lines his pockets ... just as it is for DJT. The goal us not to build, govern, look out for others ... it is the rage and hate created that matters to Tucker and DJT.
Tucker Carlson was never patriotic so no point in calling his desertion of Trump or anythng else he does “unpatriotic.” Like Trump many of MAGA types, including high ranking officials in this administration and leading Republican donors have long had allegiance only to themselves. Another downside of having people with great wealth in an unequal society is that they don’t have any good reason to be patriotic evause their wealth can, or at least they think it can, insulate them from dependence on a string America or an America that lives up to Democratic values.
Tucker is like Lindsay Graham - a smart man with a weak sense of self-esteem, desperate to appear “relevant”. In the end, nobody cares what they have to say.

I had a feeling it was too much to hope that Tucker Carlson had actually somehow seen the light & grown some morality (stranger things have happened, though off the top of my head I can’t think of one), or maybe at least reached a personal ethical limit, like Mike Pence. Apparently the only change is the exact brand of poison he’s spouting. Can’t say I’m surprised, or even disappointed.
