The Callais ruling underscores what many of us already knew. This regime is trying to consolidate power in the hands of the few. My only hope is that it is enough of a wake up call for all of us to organize and fight back.

"The Callais ruling underscores what many of us already knew. This regime is trying to consolidate power in the hands of the few."

This "regime" did not argue the case before the Supreme Court - Louisiana did. The majority determined that the district in question was drawn entirely based on race, which is unconstitutional.

As for "consolidating power", both parties are fighting that battle every day. We should all wake up to that.

The "regime" stacked the court with the help of Moscow Mitch, and they broke every rule the SCOTUS previously had. When it comes to racist decisions helping MAGA Republicans then the corrupt SCOTUS throws out the Purcell principle to stop rulings from interfering with an election in Louisiana that ALL READY STARTED.

And the corrupt SCOTUS ignored their usual policy of delaying the implementation of their ruling for approximately 30–32 days before sending them to lower courts, allowing parties time to file motions for rehearing or review the decision.

Instead, the corrupt Court rushed the Louisiana decision out of the door to green light the racist gerrymandering removing the Black representative to be replaced by a White Supremacist.

"The "regime" stacked the court with the help of Moscow Mitch..."

What you call "stacking" is, in fact, the method used by Presidents and the Senate in times past. So please elaborate on "broke every rule the SCOTUS previously had".

"the Purcell principle"

I'm pretty sure that's not actually a law, so there's that.

"Instead, the corrupt Court rushed the Louisiana decision out of the door..."

The case was heard back in October. As to why the ruling occurred when it did, there could be several reasons. Neither one of us are privy to the deliberations that resulted in the timing of the decision.

"...to green light the racist gerrymandering ..."

If the district is drawn specifically because of race, that is racist, it's unconstitutional, and that's what the Court ruled.

Tim_TEC's avatar

The corrupt and partisan SCOTUS acts like Purcell is codified law but only when it hurts the Dems and helps Republicans. Like in Wisconsin when they blocked the extension of allowing late arriving mail ballots due to COVID. And in Alabama where the drunken rapist Kavanaugh ruled their map was illegally racial gerrymandered but allowed the Alabama racists to use their illegal map that shoved out the legitimate Black representative and to steal the seat.

I realize it's second nature to most in the forum, and you have Jen Rubin as a role model, but let's see if you can drop some of the rhetorical modifiers in your descriptions. It doesn't advance your argument at all.

Tim_TEC's avatar

Don't you dare to lecture me about rhetoric when your Lord God Savior is Donald Trump and you slavishly bleat out the musings of Trump's cadre of flying monkey propagandists like Catturd and Libs of TikTok.

If I were a fan of conspiracy theories, I would feel that someone on the Supreme Court somehow (illegally) communicated with red state leaders of their intent on Callais in advance. We see how these various states had plans ready to go as soon as the decision was announced. The Supreme Court is CORRUPT (well, actually six of the justices including the Chief Justice). By the way, just because the Court ruled that way did not force all these states to change their maps. But in just a few days, all these changes were approved and Black people were deprived of the representation they want. In addition, they halted voting already in progress in some states. That has got to be illegal. And based on remarks from the politicians, they are giddy with excitement that they could now eliminate minority-majority districts. When Democrates are back in power, they must institute reforms at the Supreme Court. No more shadow docket. All opinions must be signed by all justices. Increase the size of the Court to 13 and install term limits.

Steven Branch's avatar

Alan, the MAGAts in the Louisiana legislature (I live in this racist state) have been chomping at the bit to restrict Black representation long before LA v. Callais landed in the lap of the corrupt SCOTUS. If/when the court ruled to plunge the dagger into the heart of the VRA, these haters of representative democracy were cocked and ready to eliminate, either in whole or in part, any semblance of proportional representation in our congressional delegation. 33% of the state's citizens are Black but as of yesterday, the congressional map now has 5 MAGAt/white districts and 1 Dem/Black.

Growing up, I heard the phrase "The South shall rise again." Little did I know that would morph into "The Jim Crow South has risen again" in 2026. This whole affair brings shame and humiliation to an entire region of the country and the creation of a MAGAt white oligarchy is happening before our very eyes.

I don't like conspiracy theories, but I do not believe that the majority of the Roberts Court can be trusted any farther than I could throw one of them, and I'm an old disabled woman.

More specifically, the KKK is "giddy with excitement."

Patricia Dempsey's avatar

I was stunned myself, especially as there was already voting happening in LA. Now those votes are, what, thrown out? Are those who already voted allowed to vote again? The insanity of it all is staggering!

Still Blaming Mitch's avatar

Shocking that the maps could be redrawn immediately without waiting the 32 days typically set aside to ask SCOTUS to reconsider (based on evidence it ignored or failed to address in its decision that might have changed the outcome).

I couldn’t agree with you more. Our democracy is due for a tune-up. Repairs need to be made if this car is going to run. Of course, the guy at the wheel needs to go since those around him and the Republican Congress have decided to glorify the driver as he races for the cliff. We’ve never had anything like this before so the flaws in our system have become glaring and dangerous. I think Democratic candidates should be running on reform and accountability. There must be consequences for this corruption and theft from taxpayers, US.

After they succeed in beating down people of color the MAGA Fascists will be coming for those of us who aren't Christian, or those they believe are not the correct variety of Christian. No decent human being will be safe in MAGA America.

I’m so grateful that I live close enough to Montgomery, Alabama to participate in this event. I am willing to do whatever it takes to ensure justice, liberty, fairness, equality and democracy for all Americans and that includes people of all colors, backgrounds and walks of life. We must all vote if it means the polling locations are totally swamped and overwhelmed. Unless you vote absentee in Alabama you must stand in line on election day to cast a ballot. No early voting in our state. I hope the southern part of my state where all the redistricting is supposed to take place is absolutely swamped with people. The key is to vote, vote, vote!

Happy Contrarian here!

Thank you Jennifer for your ongoing tireless efforts. Jim Crow redistricting is on fire, Congressional Democrats are NOT going to save us (still only less than 5% are taking action!) & we can only hope We The People save our Democracy, Humanity, Earth with a 3.5% NK4 turnout July 1st - shameful we’ve not (yet) reached this necessary level of participation to topple the t regime. EVERYONE must take some action. Nationwide peaceful protests once every few months is NOT going to topple the t regime…look to the courage of Minnesotans who took to the street everyday! - and Hungary!

Ms Brown is right - the path of incrementalism is dead & needs to be replaced with a full blown analysis of the Constitution to address areas/issues where the language is soft & has allowed the Rethuglicans to cede power to the unitary executive.

Don Kennedy's avatar

“ has allowed the Rethuglicans to cede power to the unitary executive.”

I’m not sure what can be done in cases where Congress deliberately chooses not to act. If the Congress majority chooses to cede power to a unitary executive, what can be done about that? If that is made illegal, who would enforce it?

Ann M Haley's avatar

That is one of the tricky issues our Constitutional scholars will have to wrestle with.

“White supremacists’ tactics have evolved, but their aim has not changed. “

So….SO….Stupid. People are people. Everybody has to be some color. Such Neanderthal thinking. But, it’s just as much about a power grab by Republicans, and creating more unfairness in voting. The First Amendment needs to be amended to also prohibit discrimination on the basis of: political party, and who you vote for!

We need to form a stable coalition of the generationally stable groups within society. A Nash style equilibrium would be effective. The first step is to identify the generationally stable groups within society whose interests would drive the dynamics. Here are a few candidates:

1. There are those who want "...liberty and justice for all."

2. There are those who believe "The quality of ideas is the foundation of true authority"

3. There are those who believe in "One nation under God..."

4. There are those who seek a theocracy.

5. There are those who seek a lords (oligarchs) and serfs society, e.g., slaves and masters.

6. There are those who want a king.

These groups are generationally stable. They have been here for centuries. The "melting pot" idea hides the truth of that subgroup stability. The system we set up has more or less worked for 250 years except for the civil war over slavery. The military conflict was concluded but it didn't change hearts and minds in the confederate states.

We have the means to set up and study a huge range of adjustments via simulation and modeling. The dynamics can be understood. Prof. Nash assures us stable solutions exist if we set up the right dynamics. It is well worth the effort.
