It is maddening and disgusting at the same time that school didn’t do anything to hold them to account. I don’t blame her for suing them. I hope she takes them to the cleaners. They should all be named and publicly shamed and shunned.

with two rapists on the Supreme Court, what does one expect? So glad this case brings Kavanaugh into the day light again. hope it will bring Thomas into the limelight again as well....

And don't forget the one in the White House.

They have wreaked so much havoc on women's rights.

Thanks very much for that heartbreaking piece. It really knocked me back on my butt. Especially at the mention of "me too". Evil men, Donald J. Trump, Charlie Kirk, Epstein, Kavanaugh, and on and on and on have tried the last few years to stomp the life out of that movement and replace it with Charlie Kirk's movement and Trad Wives and God knows how many other foul and evil attempts to put us back where they think we belong. I am 73 and not going back into that past. And my daughter, daughter-in-law, granddaughters, my sister they are not going back into the past.

Not one more Jane Doe.

As I near the end of my life (no, I'm not sick, just older), I'm heartbroken that all our work and fighting for the dignity, rights and opportunities for women will still not be providing full personhood for the living generations of women following us.

And Thomas before Kavanaugh. I remember watching the Clarence Thomas (Anita Hill) confirmation hearings. Nothing changes.

As long as the patriarchy holds power, it won't change. As long as men believe that they have an inalienable right to power women are not safe.

It horrifies me that nothing has changed. I went to college decades ago, and women were raped all the time. And whenever we tried to report it, the VICTIM was treated like utter scum and nothing ever happened. Even when we had a pack of women willing to testify as witnesses and had physical evidence. No one would even open an investigation. And all of those rapists are now sitting on judge's benches and working in law enforcement and well, everywhere else, and none of them think that rape is a crime so they give their fellow rapists a pass.

Thank you, Jennifer, for this important and heartbreaking essay. The part that angered me the most was Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s stubborn insistence that his office “rationally presumed a case of mutual consent.” Excuse me? Do men really believe that a woman would consent to be viciously gang-raped against her will, while under the influence of drugs that were forced on her? Omfg. As human rights lawyer Qasim Rashid asserts in his article below, “Women are not safe around men.”

Agree. So bizarre. If she consented, why would she be filing a complaint?

Your comments on the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing remind me of my thoughts then, which echoed my thoughts during the Clarence Thomas confirmation farce - Is this the best we can do? Out of all the millions of lawyers in this country, can’t we find someone who is smart enough to sit on the Supreme Court (assuming that’s a relevant qualification) whose personal life doesn’t offend half the population? No one is ENTITLED to an appointment to the Supreme Court (even though Kavanaugh obviously thought he was). If there are serious questions about a nominee, they should just start over. A lifetime appointment requires a lifetime that demonstrates a commitment to fairness and an understanding of what that really means.

Misogyny permeates our culture right now, from the very top down. It is not limited to the "boys will be boys" and "women deserved it" attitudes. DEI is as much about getting rid of opportunities for women as it is about non-whites. Republicans have restricted women's rights to make health care decision about their own bodies. The SAVE America Act that Trump is pushing so hard to pass would make it difficult for married women to vote, requiring documentation from them that it does not require from men. Women need to fight for ALL their rights - all over again. The struggle doesn't end.

Women and girls have a long way to go in this country for protection and support. I just called and wrote to Gov. Lee begging him to grant clemency over execution for Christa Pike. She is a woman who was physically and sexually abused beginning in childhood and went on to do some terrible things. She is, not surprisingly, fragile and mentally ill as a middle aged woman, having spent years on death row after a harrowing childhood surrounded by monsters. The college students in this article are monsters, too, and must pay a heavy price for what they have done. Rape is always devastating.

This is not new behavior for Cornell fraternity men. I attended many a party there in the 50’s and nothing has changed.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

I had hoped the work we did in the 60s and 70s might have changed things for future generations of women but nooooo ...

I am disgusted. Two rapists on the SCOTUS and a rapist and criminal in the White House, it is DISGUSTING, I wrote an articel a while ago reviewing Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford';s bio and how the Federalist Society DELIBERATELY DARVO'd her ! Deny - Attack - Reverse -Victim - Offender and also Chanel Miller;s bio - I am outraged ! DARVO should be IN EVERY HEADLINE!! https://www.heartlifeholistic.com/post/aoc-calling-out-gaslighting

Thank you for these comments.

Our kids and students we know need to more about what each can do to prevent this sort of violence. Have you any additional commentary or and other resources that I can refer these young people to?

Although I am angered by the despicable conduct of these frat brats, I am not impressed by the vitriol of this column. As I understand it, the story told by Jane Doe a few weeks after the episode differs from the story she now tells many months later. The DA, obviously lacking the second story, acted on the first story.

I am a Cornell alumnus who withdrew from any association with my fraternity after a relatively recent disgusting sexual escapade. As such, I am appalled at the university's inability to deal with protests and rapes. Underlying this inability is its arrogance that Cornell can and should--it believes itself entitled to--deal with them. In such situations, what would be regarded as criminal conduct in society outside university grounds should be regarded as criminal conduct on the campus and, in such cases, turned over to the police. The modern university is not a medieval university, which gave religious protection from civil authorities to its clerical members.

You would understand the vitriol if you walked in female shoes.

Michael L Hays's avatar

I could use vitriol myself--one does not have to be female to be outraged by sexual assaults on them; it may help to have a daughter--but I do not think that it improves the message.

gail's avatar

I don't think one third of male students has been sexually assaulted in college. If the vitriol is bothersome, maybe help change the societal acceptance of victimizing women who are brave enough to bring forth their experience.

Giving advice to someone whom you do not know is both ignorant and arrogant. Your distemper discredits you. Have the last word, if you must.
