Great summary by Ms. Rubin. Democrats need to pay heed to everything she says, and rotate through these talking points (given that the legacy media have the attention span of fruit flies). And, where are the complete Epstein files? That needs to be asked every single day.
Ms. Rubin is saying what every Democrat running for office in November should be saying every day! Corruption, of course. Ruinous policies, no question. Trump is a loser, and we all know it. BUT the Republican Congress has supported him 100%. Say that loud and clear through the campaigns. Get them out!!
2. IMHO gas prices are fixed (via OPEC) and at the refinery level, companies are profiteering. I last this out a couple of days ago. S. 4111; Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act
You said what I just posted, but I think you said it better! Jen's post needs to be repeated in totality, in bits and pieces, relentlessly, as relentlessly as the lies DJT and his minions spit out.
So, what are Republicans to do? They try blaming Joe Biden, but the public does not buy that he is still responsible for the economy.
I know someone who became chair of a department that had a lot of problems. A very senior and academically-savvy colleague at the university this person was leaving to take the new position gave this advice:
You've got 6 months when you can blame your predecessors for the problems you inherited. After that, you own them!
That might be a good rule-- for about 6 months Don the Con might have gotten away with blaming Biden for inflation and Afghanistan (although Biden was keeping to the timetable established by Don's negotiation), but by this time Biden's tenure is ancient history.
I am a lifelong Democrat. For many years I have watch the Republican Party attempt to change the country into their desired image of America. Nixon, Reagan, Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist, 'W', and many others are all cut from the same cloth. The thing that makes the present situation worse than those that have come before is the occupant of the White House acting as a dictator.
Always, when I have tried to talk with my neighbors who lean Republican, I have been scorned or shouted down. I am relieved to see Democrats beginning to take a firmer stand and use some of the same tactics as the other party for a change. I hope this is an indication of things to come,
For 100+ years, the republicans have been the party of well-heeled white men. It has morphed into the party of the minions of the Oligarchs. State TV keeps the base infuriated all the time so they don’t have time tothink see they are being had. The Oligarchs give their politicians enough opportunities to become millionaires in office to get them to vote for the corrupt state. And the guys at the top die with Fafner’s Hoardes they could never have spent in their lifetimes. If we win the day in November and again in 2028, we need to have a way to disassemble this power structure in the can and waiting.
One of the latest entries in the Trump Book of Shame is Trump’s desire to send our Afghan war allies back to Afghanistan or to the Republic of Congo. Congressional Republicans will undoubtedly support this horror. We cannot allow this. Please let your senators and House member know that this is shameful and unacceptable..
So it's no longer a nation of, for, and by the People. It's now a nation of, for, and by the Trump family and any and all and only those who cater to them...
The GOP only has the gremlin dust of Trump's hate filled agenda to run on. America is sick of his bombast, his lies and his petty prejudices. We're taking our country back, finally.
These are arguments for rational voters. I live in Trumpland, where I am outvoted 2 to 1. I've talked to people. It isn't what Republicans have DONE for them, it's who they ARE. I am going to quote Hillary Clinton: "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic."
The MAGA Fascist Party will run on the same thing it has always run on: BIGOTRY. That's what the TV commercials in the recent redistricting vote in Virginia played to. MAGA didn't win, but it was close. Basically, the ads said: Those people Who Are Not Like You (strait, White, Christian, gun-toting men) are coming take your "hard-earned" taxes, steal your stuff, rape your women, abuse your children, & grab your guns. That line hasn't always won but it's almost always close. All that's necessary is for some Democrats, who don't get their perfect candidate, to throw a tantrum. And there are the self-righteous They're All the Same Voters (TASV) who won't vote. Furthermore, there is always the large number of semi-conscious, low-information people in the electorate who seldom vote because they're too busy playing with their apps and other toys. To evaluate the prospects of a Democratic victory in 2026, do we need to know anything other than the fact that the Felon & Crime Boss was reelected in 2024?
the country remains 50/50 on a lot of issues...some areas starting to wise up but the VA vote was truly basically 50/50 so proper voter participation in the mid terms, as we know, is crutial in this time of American crisis
I am perennially haunted by a comment I saw on a left-wing post during the late stages of the 2014 campaign. Someone had posted pretty accurate predictions of what the second DJT reign would look like, and this person posted: "I am afraid all that is probably true, but while I don't know what SHE (e.g Ms. Harris) will do I know it will be much, much worse." I actually replied asking what they thought would happen but that was not responded to. I think there are an awful lot of potential voters out there, so heavily influenced by the deadly combination of MSM sanewashing the right while Faux & Co are exaggerating nonsense ("eating the pets", "opening up the insane asylums", "imposing gender idealogy"). Like, better the devil you know than the one you don't.
Yes. The things the MAGA people believe is the reason I call them The MAGA Voodoo Cult. They believe things that no rational, reasonable person would believe (like eating the pets). I'm retired now but worked for over 30 years in three different psychiatric hospitals. I was a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who worked closely with psychiatrists and psychologists. I also grew up around an uncle who had schizophrenia. I'm familiar with mental illness.
"In sum, Republicans are rarely asked what they have done to deserve re-election." That is a very good question and I plan to use it.
We are having a meet & greet for a new State Senate candidate today. She is young and energetic, running against a Republican who has done nothing. He even went to the bathroom on 2 occasions to avoid voting in the legislature, claiming that eaten too much pizza the night before. It is thought that his many signs all over the county two years ago were paid for by the Koch family.
This is an excellent question to ask voters. Republicans haven’t done nada to help the average American. They are more consumed with hanging on to power and control than anything else. This is the time for Democrats to step up and ask this question to the voters. They must do more than just talk they must point out their achievements and where they can lead them in the future. Dems must continue to set the tone for a successful election in 2026.
Actually They’ve sued to take away the Virginia vote to support the new map. and they’ve bellyached that when Democrats take a page from
their playbook, it’s unfair! They can’t face that what’s good for the goose..

Yes, CORRUPTION! They should be repeating that word over and over. It has an outsized effect.
Simple one word sound bites are best.
1. Subpoena every witness, starting with Trump.
2. IMHO gas prices are fixed (via OPEC) and at the refinery level, companies are profiteering. I last this out a couple of days ago. S. 4111; Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act

State AGs also can reduce gas prices now.
You said what I just posted, but I think you said it better! Jen's post needs to be repeated in totality, in bits and pieces, relentlessly, as relentlessly as the lies DJT and his minions spit out.
But aren't you doing what the mainstream media is doing, prescribing what Democrats need to do instead of highlighting the rethug party's failures?
I think what Democrats need to do is to highlight the (many, many) GOP failures, since the legacy media won't do that.
That's how they've won practically every special election.
Good points.
So, what are Republicans to do? They try blaming Joe Biden, but the public does not buy that he is still responsible for the economy.

Those tactics may be distasteful, but they make sense in the situation. I have 2 sayings that fit well:
1. In the land of thieves the honest person is a fool
2. You don't send Little Lord Fauntleroy out to do battle against Bluto

Absolutely shocking, I agree. I hope these displaced people find representation that blocks Trump’s ugly process.
Thank you. Our word has to be our bond. Every American life they saved is someone’s family member.
Thank you J. Rubin for a very solid and inclusive analysis. If only the so-called mainstream press would come even close to such solid work.
So it's no longer a nation of, for, and by the People. It's now a nation of, for, and by the Trump family and any and all and only those who cater to them...

Yessss! From your lips to the ears of whatever deity or natural force you believe in!!
A great article. Thank you!
Truly the GOP is the Guardian of Pedophiles.
I’ll never vote for a republican again in any race. I am so literally sick to my stomach.
Never have and certainly now never will. I'll admit voting for an independent - once.

Still true. People who fit those descriptions, and I would add "anti reproductive rights" to that mix too, will not vote for Democrats.
I agree, but we can hope they do not vote at all.

What Have Republicans Done For Voters Lately?
You call disenfranchisement nothing? /s
“FOR” suggests support for voters. “TO” is the word for your observation, and entirely true.
"In sum, Republicans are rarely asked what they have done to deserve re-election." That is a very good question and I plan to use it.

Great column! The title of this column should be the campaign slogan for the dems with the soundtrack of Edwin Starr's soundtrack playing:
"Trump, huh, yeah
What is he good for?
Absolutely nothing, uhh,
Trump, huh, yeah
What is he good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all"
