Federal worker household here. Groundhog Day is way too cute a name for the continual stress inflicted upon us by holding our jobs hostage because Republicans--and apparently, many Democratic senators--refuse to do their jobs and compromise over a reasonable budget that serves all Americans. That is not our fault. This shutdown cycle has robbed us of our physical health and peace of mind, as well as the morale needed to do a good job ourselves. Yet we soldier on. If anyone deserves the equal and opposite praise that should be generated by the outcry over capitulation, it is federal workers. How about insisting that our working lives be improved as a bargaining point?

I am very sorry you and your family have been victimized by a dozen or so supposedly Democrratic senators (not to speak of the fascist senators and their corrupt and fascist leader). The worst part that makes me absolutely furious is that you were victimized for forty plus days for basically nothing.

I so rarely hear that that it means a lot to me. Our friends and family are desensitized to the continual sad news on our behalf because it has gone on for 20 years, having escalated steeply in the past decade. As I've said, every state in the union must balance its own budget annually--no exceptions. That is the standard we should have nationally, and if Congress cannot do it, they should remain in session and receive no pay or healthcare or travel expenses until they do. Turnabout is fair play. Thanks again, Ark.

I think Congress should put ALL their paychecks into a fund for furloughed federal employees, especially those who are forced to work without pay.

big supporter of federal workers & the federal government

the solution to the federal budget is to make the ultra wealthy pay their fair share

Our country is run by fascists because all 3 branches have been captured by billionaires.

I'm saying Congress should of its own accord and to fulfill its job duties offer a reasonably balanced budget every year, not a promise to do it three months later... and three months later... and three months later... And when we pay and tell our reps how to spend it, that's how it gets spent. That's not too much to ask, is it Mr. Epstei--er, Mr. President"? :)

I agree. Just that the (most, not all) states balance their budgets so so should the feds argument is not, imo, a good one.

A better one is the maga gop are fascists who passed a budget giving huge tax cuts to the ultra-rich while gutting SNAP and Medicaid.

The maga gop is the problem here, not the Democrats. Both sides are not the same.

Agree 100%. The reason they are paid continuously is why it is so easy for them to do a shutdown.

It's like Trump bringing innumerable DOJ lawsuits on our dime. What does he care? He might as well try to win in court, and if he doesn't, no skin off of his orange nose.

I have federal family in Virginia. May you all go from strength to strength. You are very valued. Hopefully one of the Senate provisions to end the shutdown will be enforced in the rehiring of fired federal workers and the cessation of any further firings.

Mr. Eisen stated the situation that we're now facing very clearly.

Appeasement only invites further attacks and concessions from a bully who considers any form of capitulation or appeasement as weakness.

In this case, we have a vague and open-ended "promise" from Senator Thune that the matter of funding ACA subsidies will take place "sometime later in December." This, from a party that is well known not to keep promises, was not a good bargain. If we ever see any legislative action, it will be a miracle.

Millions were hurting. Claim victory. Democrats should stop fighting and target Republicans. Better than playing politics while 40 million go hungry. Republicans don’t care.

maga gop (there are no capital R Republicans who support the regime :) is far worse than "not caring." The obvious endgame is to force the majority of US citizens into poverty, sickness, hunger.

The theory being it's easier to control the population that way. These people are fascists. The cruelty isn't a by product. It's strategy and goal.
