When I have mentioned this to medical personnel they have waved it aside as something that is already known, but if it's so well-known why haven't we been more proactive in controlling it?
We are entering the dark ages of medical treatment here in the US. Doctors may as well wear long masks with pointed noses for all the stupids listen to them. I do not know when so many began to believe that they know more than doctors. So many mothers are willing to risk the lives and well being of their children in addition to those children who are medically unable to be vaccinated. We have become a third world nation in regard to measles. Autism may have a cause...maybe it does and maybe it doesn't but that cause does not lie in children being vaccinated. The only way we can really know is through research and Trump has effectively ended that avenue. Children all over the world are dying because of our government's inaction. Dr Fauci deserves our awe and respect for the number of lives he has saved through his work. Those GOP goons deserve nothing but derision.
This article touchés me deeply. I lost my husband to Covid in 2020 before the vaccine was available. I will never be over the loss of the love of my life. And it is very lonely to see the world moving on and not caring about those who are still suffering. It’s discouraging and infuriating that people won’t take even a small step to protect the vulnerable. The treatment of Anthony Fauci is beyond disgraceful.

It can’t be trusted to get the story right. The “right” story is the human story, as you tell it, not the story about Fauci taking the fifth 100 times as if he has something to hide. The people you describe who will not listen, who beat up on public servants like Fauci, who are not curious, who care only for the public display they make (as if saying, “Who the f*ck do you think you were…” is attractive) are not “well.” They are deeply unwell. Something is wrong with them.
I serve a lot of patients with autoimmune and neuroimmune disorders. Every one of them who have gotten Covid are far worse with multiple symptoms that doctors do not know how to treat and most are completely disabled within 2 mos after Covid. It is not the same when they have gotten pneumonia or a severe flu. The lack of research in so many areas will kill silently and the numbers will never be counted.
I’m so sorry for your ongoing illness. I’ll never forget my shock when I first heard someone say they didn’t think Covid was real. And this was only 2 or 3 weeks in. Unfortunately there is a very active propaganda machine denigrating science and research. I’m just not sure what we can do.
I read excerpts of the Fauci hearing and it made me sick. Everything this administration says and does makes me sick: the lies, the rabid treatment by ICE, the continuing assault on voting rights, women, rule of law, the corruption and grift. I am so sorry you are ill and with such a politically fraught condition as long Covid. It’s like you have to fight twice as hard: for your health and for legitimacy. Covid had retreated from my mind - because of the crowding of all the other daily and continuous deplorable assaults by this administration - until I followed bits of the terrible Fauci “hearing”, and then again today reading your gut-wrenching essay and also wearing an N-95 mask again for the first time in years because of horrendous wildfire smoke in my state, with EPA particulate matter in the “Health warning of emergency conditions” realm. I was the only person wearing a mask in a couple of different cities/towns I had to visit today. The smoke was visible and burning my eyes and I could not believe the lack of awareness of self care and ignorance of people walking around outside. It brought back the feeling of despair, disappointment and disgust I developed for those refusing vaccination/masks during the pandemic. May the times you feel better and “normal” increase day by day.

My husband spent 17 days in the hospital with Covid 19. He has lung damage to this day from Covid. We both had it at the same time in late December 2020- early January 2021. My case was much milder than his . Vaccines were not available to us at the time and were not available until around March or April of that year. He was out of work for 3 months and still came home from the hospital with an oxygen concentrator that he used for about another 4 or 5 weeks.
During that time I always had to take my mom to see the oncologist every 3 or 4 weeks for treatment or follow up. At the time, before much was known about Covid transmission, Dr.’s offices used a lot of cleaning and disinfecting chemicals to keep everything clean and sanitized , especially in an oncology treatment clinic where those patients are susceptible to infection due to compromised immune systems. I always went in with my mom to get the latest information about her progress, but having allergies and autoimmune illnesses myself I often couldn’t come in the building due to the reactions I would have that were allergic in nature. That was another complication in dealing with Covid that was not talked about often, especially when it came to the caregivers that were having the reactions. My first commitment was to my mom, but I simply couldn’t stay in an environment where my own physical health was being compromised. I had to leave it up to mom’s nurses to see her through the appointment. They eventually cut back on the level of disinfectant because at lot of people including their own patients are chemically sensitive to that level of sanitization.
Thank you for writing this, and bringing to the forefront the experience of your long COVID, made worse by the societal denial that seems to have be born under the Trump regime, a world of alternative facts, where science and disease are labeled "Hoaxes." It is a purview showing an appalling lack of awareness of how we became a great nation, primarily through our ability to grasp facts, define problems and then roll up our sleeves to learn more, and fix things. I appreciate your courage and candor, and pray for the day where Truth finds a home here again. That will be the beginning of understanding and finding treatments, if not also a cure, for long COVID. Fauci's work to understand the mechanisms and treat AIDS, along with that of your late uncle, and so many others, have made a real difference in the prognosis and treatment of that horrible disease. Most people don’t even know there is something called long Covid. There’s no real recognition that it’s become endemic, like flu. I noticed that even a couple of years after the pandemic was over, blacks were still wearing masks. I saw this in grocery stores where almost all blacks wore masks and no one who was white did. Then you could look at the obituaries in the newspaper and at least one day a week count 21 funerals, all in the black funeral home. Now the black population in Montgomery, Alabama has always had multiple health problems and poor access to healthcare, but this is different. How many of these deaths can be attributed to long Covid? The initials used in a physical WNL mean within normal limits, but I’ve heard a physician friend say it we never looked. Covid mutates, and it is coming around again. We ignore this at our own peril. There is no way to estimate the lives that would have been lost if we didn’t mask, carried on schools in attendance, and believed people who claimed there was no such problem. We sanitized hands or washed regularly before we knew it was airborne. Research took a while to identify the distance the virus could travel in the air. Fauci updated recommendations as more was learned. Attacks on him are a distraction and a result of the idiocy of RFK, Jr. Trump energized production of Operation Warp Speed, then began to talk about stupid cures or preventatives for Covid. Biden pushed vaccination and safety measures that saved lives with the vaccine Trump speeded up and then acted as if we were idiots getting vaccinated rather than using bleach or Ivormectin to treat it. Fauci took the fifth so he didn’t say something that was twisted by opponents. I know there were people dying of illnesses brought on by Covid who insisted until they died that they did not or had not had Covid. The death certificate listed the immediate cause. My father’s death certificate named pneumonia. He had lung cancer and a lung removed, but that was not the immediate cause of death. Try fighting pneumonia with 1 lung.
