There are ads running about the world cup that are so sad. It has a number of soccer balls floating in the NY harbor I am assuming with different country flags. Then the Statue of Liberty shows up and the slogan at that point is "Where dreams are made." Now that is so ironic especially aired on Sunday during the football playoffs, 1 day after the 2nd shooting in Minneapolis. What hypocrisy!
Why would anyone want to come here when our government doesn’t respect civil rights or the basics like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? This is something our nit wit government didn’t think about.
Normally I strongly believe that sports, like any other business, should not be political. Individuals can and should be involved in their own private time. But, as you say, the current USA political climate is "something that has gone too far and they may not like it but they will have to see it and react to it and that's power in a really really important way in an attention economy." I personally think, from a political and from a safety standpoint, that the FIFA games played in the USA should be boycotted. Trump understands money [if not much else] and this will be a great way to stand up to him.
We have no business hosting any international athletic events. We cannot guarantee any visitors safety. We have a mountain of problems to fix before we can claim to be civilized again. As to the Rams. I grew up in Long Beach and I dislike the Rams intensely. The Seahawks beat them, but there is great animosity about the Rams here. That atmosphere is what drove that taunting penalty.

Sadly no matter what the athletes are willing to do, the big money people behind the event will happily bring it to the USA to make more money.
Yup, the new robber barons LOVE the convicted felon and will stick with him, no matter what.
