Trump knows how slowly lawsuits can achieve justice, and he does not care who sues him--particularly when taxpayers are funding the litigation. He uses the courts to gain time and advantage, full stop. That the supreme court will not acknowledge that makes their majority fully complicit in this underhanded tactic.

This is what happens when a malevolent sociopath pretends to president. Note how Mister is opening a fraud department while pardoning those convicted of fraud—as he was. The “department” will be used to drag his opponents into court and possibly prison.

Absolutely true. The irony..it burns my eyes.

And, as has been going on for months, noone is doing anything. We (as a country) continue to roll over and play dead.

Soon we will no longer finding ourself "playing dead". We Americans will wake up and find our country's democracy truly dead.

I suggest reading Norm Eisen's report about his personal capacity for hope from Friday's roundup and listening to Jonathan Alter's talk with Jen about the historical perspective and why he believes we patriots will prevail. Unfortunately, we must live through the shite first. Hang in there, Robert. Glad you're a Contrarian, friend.

If we're counting on the Roberts Star Chamber to save us, we are in deep trouble.

Thank you "... because it's the actions of the federal government - of immigration agents - that is leading to the unrest".

All the "maybes" are pretty unsettling.

A naïve question from north of your border:

If the Insurrection Act is invoked in a state, can that then be used to suspend elections within that state as long as the Act is in effect (i.e. the midterms)?

If the answer is "yes", then I understand why Trump wants to do it, and I would expect more Blue states to follow in response to the predictable snowball of protests in those states...

I'm sure all of this is already in a playbook somewhere.

Clearly, these are uncharted waters, considering it has never been done before. It's not that there is a legal rationale for suspending elections, it is that Trump may do so and then reverse-engineer a reason that will be challenged in court. He knows how long a resolution to that would take, and of course by the time it is resolved, the damage would be done. Elections are timely for a good reason.

It's all invented. The only out-of-control emergency taking place in this country is the one-man wrecking ball in the White House. (Thank you for asking and caring. We're Canuckophiles in this house and appreciate your... forbearance :)

Roberts and his Heritage Foundation bought justices cannot be trusted. They created this monster & Kavanaugh made it worse.

This monster is now consuming American Democracy. Good bye American pie.

"Invoking the Insurrection Act would be truly extraordinary, as evidenced by it not having been used over 30 years. Its use in Minnesota is especially inappropriate because it’s the actions of the federal government—of immigration agents—that is leading to the unrest."

Not expecting Trump to go beyond the 'extraordinary' is far from realistic. He will push boundaries until finally there is enough force exerted to stop him.

It's almost a guarantee that if ICE operatives left Minnesota, the unrest would end. This is what should happen. They are throwing gasoline on the fires.

SCOTUS can no longer be trusted to follow the laws of the Constitution. They make it up as they go. If enough of them agree with Trump they will allow it.

I want to see how they justify wielding tariffs (that we pay for) as punishments for our allies who simply support a sovereign nation's right to exist. When are they going to get off their asses and get our money back for us? This has already gone on too long, and they failed to rule last week as they were supposed to do.

We are past the "beginning of the end" and have moved on to "the middle of the end" for American democracy. The American people, to me seem totally unconscious as to what they are allowing to happen.

Well, here is where protest plays an educational role. I went down to the demonstration in the little red town near me last week and met a man who had parked his Jeep by the side of the road with a sign referring to ICE that read: DO YOU FEEL SAFER YET? He was dressed in what looked like hunting gear, he told me, so that local guys would notice him and his manly car and realize they could listen to him.

Getting people's attention is harder these days. That's why this week when I went to the protest, I wore my bright marigold-colored coat and brought my two cute dogs dressed in their bright coats. You couldn't miss us, and gee, you couldn't really gripe about us either. I'll just keep chipping away at folks' attention spans.

It’s my understanding from a conversation that Steve Vladeck had with Allison Gill on substack the other day is that even if the military are deployed, their activities are restricted to policing activities, that is they are only an expansion of the local police force and must adhere to the conduct of police officers. Sadly, I should clarify, legal conduct of police officers. Does anyone have a different understanding of what sort of conduct military personnel would be permitted to perform? https://open.substack.com/pub/stevevladeck/p/what-to-know-about-the-insurrection?r=5k9s3t&utm_medium=ios&shareImageVariant=overlay

Addendum: I see now that Steve Vladeck had a conversation with Jen, as well. Will watch that.
