Pete Seeger did American folk music and protest songs. Those were two of his genres. He wrote the concluding line to Turn Turn Turn made famous by the Byrds. A time for peace I swear it’s not too late.
I have loved Woody Guthrie songs for most of my life. I had no idea he wrote Deportee. If I recall correctly I used to have a recording of that song by Rosalie Sorrels, and always loved it. It's nice to see Woody Guthrie remembered; too many seem to have forgotten about him.
I am no Woody Guthrie but I do have a new protest song that I dedicate to all those satirists and writers and comedians out there helping us laugh and find our people in these crazy times. Here is a link to the song on YouTube.
"There is just one way to save yourself, and that’s to get together and work and fight for everybody.”
Thank you for this piece. We sure could use a modern day Woody Guthrie.
Check out Jesse Welles. He won the John Prine award this year (but he's more political than Prine.)
Jesse Welles is the deal, todays voice!

Tom Russell did a great cover of it, too.
He is an American icon.
The recording process brings Springsteen's Nebraska to mind. A nice side by side image to have in my head.
