Personally, if I were a victim of a crime, I would take no solace in knowing that the perpetrator was a citizen versus an immigrant. It's not clear why "domestic" criminals are getting preferential treatment in this regime.

Alan Greenstein's avatar

Let me correct that: WHITE domestic criminals. After all, to Trump and his bigots and racists, black and brown people should not even be citizens.

Someday, the ICC will be putting the entire Trump regime on trial (in absentia, perhaps) for crimes against humanity. Supreme Court proclamations of "immunity" will not apply at The Hague.

I pray I see that day!!!!!

Richard Brody's avatar

Unless, of course, T…p pardons the lot of them. Happened before and undoubtedly will happen again.

Stephen Brady's avatar

But they are - the number of white male, US citizens pardoned for white-collar crimes is much higher than the number of foreign-borns who got pardoned... but I'll bet he charges a premium for those pardons.

1. Got you to stop saying the majic word -- EPSTEIN.

2. NYT Today: The People Trump Pardoned Are on a Crime Spree

"He has created a veritable pardon industry, in which people with White House connections accept payments from wealthy convicts. Among those on whom he has bestowed freedom are dozens of people convicted of fraud. He has also pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, a former president of Honduras, who helped traffic hundreds of tons of cocaine into the United States, and Ross Ulbricht, who was serving a life sentence for running Silk Road, a sprawling criminal enterprise that sold drugs. There seems to be no crime too ugly for a Trump pardon.

"Worst of all, Mr. Trump issued pardons on the first day of his second term to everyone who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He did not distinguish between rioters who were relatively peaceful and those who attacked police officers, as Vice President JD Vance said should be the case. All 1,500 or so Jan. 6 rioters received a clean slate."

Maybe it’s because immigrants are more likely be black or brown than domestic criminals?

NAH, COULDN’T BE!!

Being White and wealthy does appear to have significant advantages.

It's to appeal to the MAGA Voodoo Cult. They are the "base" of what once was the Republican Party & now the MAGA Party. Most recently in 2008 known as the "Birthers". The Birther/MAGA Cult needs to see people not like themselves (White, Christian Men) beaten down. That's what fires them up.

Putting lipstick on a pig doesn't change it into a kitten. It's still a pig. The conditions in the detention centers will not change and should continue making headlines as should the violations of due process and other abuses. The Ellison driven merger will matter more. A sane FTC would strip the news outlets from the prior mergers and block further consolidation. The 39% rule matters and should be broadened. A non-profit model with a strong social responsibility clause would be an improvement.

Steve 218's avatar

That's a darned good point. The 39% rule should indeed be broadened and ENFORCED. When it was 'news' (before it got the name 'media') there was less focus on profitability and far more on social responsibility. Times have changed.

My democratic senator, Martin Heinrich, actually voted to place Markwayne Mullin…a guy with no education, no experience, and an anger management problem, into this leadership position. We are not a “red”:area, this was done in defiance of constituents’ position, for a fella that ol’ Martin considers a “friend “. As long as Democrats in the House and Senate persist in this absurd positioning and weak compliance, we the People are well and thoroughly screwed. Many if not most incumbents should be voted out at the next opportunity. I will do my best to assure that future for Martin. We need actual leadership to confront this menace to our democracy.

Don't'cha know? Edgication is woke!

Aargh😱

Unfortunately we are stuck with Heinrich for 5 more years! Then we can wish him well as he retires to West Texas.

CE's avatar

Sadly true.,he is there until 2030. I hope that all his constituents will keep up a drumbeat of messages and phone calls to make his political life a living hell.

Nothing will change this cruel administration except a blue tsunami in November. Everyone, be sure you, your family, and friends are properly registered, and vote in EVERY election for which you qualify. School board elections, local governments, everything.

What I never understand about Republicans and others who support these policies, is that, in addition to the human costs, physical and psychological that they create on the victims, there are the economic costs to the state - something Republicans used to care about. All these children without parents are thrown into state care; families where the breadwinner has been removed need to go on assistance; farms, factories and plants are left without needed workers. All of these things damage the economy. And that's without even thinking about the billions for a war of choice! No heart, no conscience, but also, no brains! But we will have ballrooms.

they are blinded bty racism

It's worse than that. The overwhelming level of stupidity is mind-blowing.

Aah Judy... 'Let them have ballrooms'.

MarkWayne Mullin is the worst pick to fill the role of DHS Secretary. He has issues with anger, no experience in law enforcement, the law, or emergency management. He ran a family owned plumbing business with possibly a few helpers but that’s not the same as managing a very large and complex organization. We have no idea if he’s good at delegating tasks and responsibilities to other capable people or if he can stay calm and let competent people handle natural disasters from such things as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes. Having the resources and manpower to fill these roles are of utmost importance.

Ellen Bass's avatar

Why would we even think Mullin will be different? He fits right in to the Trump cabinet: no relevant experience, no credentials, no nothin'.

Bob Kolinski's avatar

We have no idea if there are any resonsible or capable people to whom he can delegate.

patricia's avatar

he really should be chief of staff...seeins how he knows how to work with shit and all...

Daniel Solomon's avatar

Perfect for rope a dope!

Steve 218's avatar

What capable people are leftt at DHS? You can also say almost the same thing about Kegsbreath as the Secretary of whatever he calls it today.

Al Keim's avatar

Markwayne has Native American ancestry!?

So he's an apple?

Red on the outside and ...

Pamela Schmid's avatar

The irony is they are throwing all of their resources into grabbing (often through trickery) immigrants with no criminal history while putting little if any resources into actually making people safer. It's all about filling the quotas by any means possible.

Ellen Bass's avatar

Of course. It's harder to catch actual criminals than people taking their kid home from school.

Nothing this regime says will soften the atrocities committed by ICE or CBP. After all, their entire existence is a spin of lies. The sad part is, many I speak with say “tRump is keeping our country safe”. It’s no small fete for me not to reply with “WTF are you talking about”?

Steve 218's avatar

People who continue to get their "news" from Faux Noise and other Social Media outlets are guided by propaganda without the benefit of facts or reality.

Kathleen M. Eisenhauer's avatar

Oops! We cannot falter at this time in our united pushback to this disgusting regime. Please, get involved in whatever lifts you up: phone banking, postcard writing, volunteering and supporting your community efforts for the midterms, protesting, wearing “No Kings” pins, etc! We must move forward and continually strive to be the voice for peace and humanitarian issues!!

James McConnel's avatar

Markwayne Mullen has shifted from ICE Brown Shirt street brawler mode to 1984 Thought Police mode. It is a move in line with Tech Broligarch AI tools and encouragement. This is leading to the huge, top secret bunker being built under the new ‘Ball Room Shed’ as Dementia Don calls it. Think 24/7 surveillance of all US citizens, eventually leading to a Social Credit System controlled by the fascist Trump Family Crime Syndicate and the Tech Broligarch / Epstein Class. Does this give you pause?

Wade Baynham's avatar

Thank you for highlighting the ongoing immortality and inhumanity. We cannot look away. Accountability Mission.

Didn't you mean 'immorality'? Otherwise, in total agreement with you.

Wade Baynham's avatar

Yes, thank you! Autocorrect got me again 🤦

The internment of some 125,000 Japanese in 1942 is considered a black mark on FDR's record to such an extent that in 1988 a $20,000 reparation was paid to any survivors and we were at war with Japan at the time. It's interesting to note that over 11,000 Germans and 3.000 Italians were also interred even though I'm quite sure they vastly outnumbered the Japanese population. That alone illustrates the racial profiling involved.

So, here we are again but this time we're talking about the target incarceration/deportation of 1 million per year of mainly Central and South Americans and Africans. Talk about a step backward in humanity. Trump's insistence on the million person target has nothing to do with criminals. It has to do with his vanity in outdoing Democratic administrations. Since when did vanity become a legal precedent?

If reparations are ever granted to the people whose lives were trashed by Trump, the funding should come directly out of his coffers.

We have to keep this in the front page. The war disaster in Iran must not hide the ongoing assault on our American way of life - immigration, health care for women, clean energy, civil rights, cybersecurity, etc.

So important to keep reporting the immigration arrests, transgressions against nonviolent immigrants, bad faith against those following our immigration laws and processes, and deaths in the incarceration nightmare of detention.

The Trump regime simply wants to "control the narrative" on ICE abuses vs actual reforming thus rogue agency and its partnering private Amazon-like human warehouses. It is only the media attention on the DHS/ICE abuses they want to change. More than ever, we need the on-the-ground citizen journalists to shed light on what they observe in their communities. Sneaky/quiet violations of human rights are still abuses under the US Constitution.
